LONDON, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Britain's Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is 22 percentage points ahead of her rival Rishi Sunak in the contest to become the country's next prime minister, a poll of Conservative Party members by Opinium Research showed on Saturday.

Among a sample of 450 party members who had decided how they would vote in the ongoing leadership election put Truss, who other polls have also shown to be the clear frontrunner, on 61%, with former finance minister Sunak on 39%, Opinium said.

The roughly 200,000 members of the ruling Conservatives are voting to decide on a replacement for Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who after a series of scandals and a parliamentary rebellion said in July he would step down once the party chooses a replacement.

The overall sample size, including those who did not express a voting preference, was 570. Less than a third of them, 29%, said they had already voted and a further 47% said they had made up their mind. Only 19% said they might still change their mind...

I honestly don’t follow Brit politics enough to know why this is good news. Top three reasons?

Can’t believe Brits don’t support a true English Gentleman like Rishi Sunak

It probably isn’t. Just shows that the establishment alone decides who is in power. The people matter very little in western “democracies” and Republics.

There are NO conservatives in the UK (at least the way we Freeper’s think about conservative principals). Margaret Thatcher was the last one. I have hope’s for Nigel Farage but he does not have enough support in England to be anywhere near Prime Minister. The rest of the UK leadership are mostly woke, milquetoast soy boys or left of center feminist. The UK is a lost cause and on the cusp of being taken over by Mooslimbs.

I’m guessing conservative means “not entirely socialist.”

I almost read right past that. My mind has learned to read through auto-correct. But that is really good.

I would never want to run for prime minister of Great Britain when a few months later they have another election to vote you out. It is the strangest political system ever.

Farage and Rees-Mogg are never likely to get elected - and if you think they’re conservative in the same way as Thatcher was, you don’t understand either of them at all.

Rees-Mogg is an effete fake toff, the son of an uber-liberal press baron who was big in the BBC and Arts Council. He married into money, and put all his money into offshore holdings, and promoted Brexit while hedging to make a lot of money out of the EU as a consequence of Brexit.

He’s a classic globalist masquerading as a virtuous conservative nationalist.

Farage is no different. His friendly pub persona schtick is also a carefully crafted image. If he ever ACTUALLY wanted to be in power, he’d be a member of a mainstream political party instead of regularly setting up parties, falling out with the other leaders, and flouncing off to form another party.

I think it's normally 5 years between scheduled elections. This one was triggered when Johnson resigned. Also note, this is just an election withing the Conservative Party to pick the next Prime Minister. A general election has Labor Party candidates as well.

I think most "democratic" countries have a system that is similar to Great Britain's. Ours is the one that's different.

In the UK a “Conservative” is about as far right as Mitt Romney or John McCain. She styles herself as the next “Maggie Thatcher” but in reality she is to the Left of Liz Cheney and slightly right of Joe Mansion. That is, however, the most conservative candidate they have. So, it is a win that she is not “Bidenish”.

#4 Mark Twain said that if voting made a difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.

“Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often, and for the same reasons.”
-Mark Twain

“There is no distinctly American criminal class except Congress,” he wrote in Puddn’head Wilson (1894).
