WEST ALLIS - Republican governor candidate Tim Michels said Thursday his party is united in the wake of a tough primary and disclosed that he received an election night telephone call from his biggest national booster, former President Donald Trump.
Two days after his win, Michels toured the Wisconsin State Fair, where he was accompanied by his running mate Roger Roth, nominated for lieutenant governor, and attorney general nominee Eric Toney.
Former long-time Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson also joined Michels.
"We're not presenting a united front, this is a united front," Michels declared as he spoke with reporters. "This is all about getting proper leadership in Madison."
Michels said he received a call from Trump on election night. Michels' victory was secured by Trump's endorsement, plus the former president's appearance at a rally in Waukesha.
"He congratulated me and again he reiterated, he said I knew I picked the right guy because you're a businessman, you're an outsider, you're not a career politician and that's what's needed in government to get things done," Michels said.
Michels said he also spoke with his top primary opponent, former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, after the two engaged in a bruising primary campaign.

Michels charged that Democrats are "leaving the hard-working people of Wisconsin behind."
"People come up to me all the time and say thank you for running, I'm tired with what's going on in politics right now. I hear it all the time, I'm in a union and they tell me to vote Democrat but the Democratic Party has left me. It's all about social issues now for the Democratic Party."
He said his No. 1 priority is "a strong economy and great jobs for the hard-working, tax-paying, law-abiding citizens of Wisconsin."

State fairs should be cancelled. They serve no purpose and are a waste of time people should be spending working out or reading a book
As is common, firearms are prohibited at the Wisconsin State Fair, which means that at a minimum their plainclothes bodyguards should be carrying, in case they are attacked by some frothy psychotic.
Tell that to the 4H kids who learn about raising their animals and hope to get to the big show at the state fair!
No words. YOU are ‘a waste of time,’ Newbie.
Momentum is building already! Just a few days in!
Listened to Michels on AM1310 with Vicki McKenna this afternoon.
I voted correctly. Michels will win, if we can overcome the ‘Rat cheating in Dane, Milwaukee, Brown and Racine Counties.
No easy task, but Wisconsin is READY for LEADERSHIP versus the feckless Art Teacher we have at the helm now. Ugh!
Before Covid - our vacations were scheduled around State Fairs - Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin, etc.
One year we even drove to the Arkansas State Fair - it was great!
State Fairs are where the real working people go to have some fun.
Have you always been an idiot or has this just come on you recently?
You guys are showing the rest of us how to win.
Well, we’re TRYING, anyway. The debates between Michels and Tony ‘One and Done’ Evers should be entertaining. ;)
I cant say that disturbed individuals arent a concern but I would think that given the location and history of the event that mobs of certain elements justifying full cap mags would be of greater concern.
There was an event a few years back where some people...it wasnt “teens” but a group defined in a similarly poor way...caught a couple of minor local polytickians and expressed their displeasure.
