Six Flags sheds nearly two million customers in the last year and shares tumble 18% as park overhauls target market and stocks plummet: CEO sounds OFF, saying, 'We became a cheap day care center for teenagers'

A shocking year at Six Flags ends in the loss of nearly two million customers and a collapse in stock value.

The world's largest theme park operator reported the loss in attendance following the implementation of an initiative to lessen the presence of 'rowdy teenagers' in their parks, according to the company's CEO Selim Bassoul.

The Texas-based theme park's shares tumbled 18% to $21.12 Thursday after it disclosed attendance at its 27 parks was down 22% from this time last year, which is wildly different when compared to Disney's reported 70% rise in park attendance year-over-year.

Bassoul, who was named CEO in 2021, blamed the drop partly on price hikes for admission in response to dishing out too many discounts last year.

'So, we only got the discounter or we became a day care center for teenagers,' and 'it was a cheap day care center for teenagers,' he said.

I used to go to the one in Jackson, New Jersey for many years.

I stopped going after busloads of trash from Trenton would get dropped off there and cause havoc by cutting lines, littering, and throwing crap like apes in the wild. No one, staff or otherwise, dared to say anything... for obvious reasons.

Are you talking about King’s Dominion in Doswell, VA? Wouldn’t that be far enough into the countryside to be safe?

I’d guess too that the season passes were giveaways by our social worrier class....I’m sure they didn’t give any away to farm kids or country kids....

What a difference from when I went in 1985...That roaring rapids was hilarious....especially when everyone got drenched on one side except for us.....

“Teens” = Black youths. Until we get honest about where the majority of these problems are coming from, it’s just going to get worse. I’m sick of the euphemisms.

If they charge MORE, they will get more people.

They need to keep the vermin out.

There is a small very cheap amusement park not far from here. Historically it was the perfect ideal of an amusement park when the patrons were local. Everyone safe all of the time and all following the same societal rules.

We started seeing a change in the 80s and continues to get worse. Chicago being over 200 miles away just wasnt that great of distance any more.

Most days its still pretty nice but you dont want to be there after the busses arrive.

I lived in Prince Georges County back in the early Seventies when I was in high school and they began bussing. It was an interesting and unpleasant experience.

There was a lot of fighting.

Apparently, nothing has changed since I last went there. I took an oath before God in 1976 that I would never go back inside that park, and I haven’t.

Rowdy, unsupervised teenagers ruined Astroworld n Houston. Family groups are more preferable and they spend more money.

egas isn’t my cup of tea, but the Strip used to have some charm.
Was there last October for a show, and the Strip smelled of nothing but weed, with shirtless addicts laying on the ground and assorted riffraff.

It was gross. Just the weed smell alone was overwhelming. Truly a disgusting place.

Marijuana ruins everything.

This is why they need to bring back Traction Park. It was a fine cocktail of humility and Darwin.

Having a six flags nearby will drive down property values.

Too many rowdy teens and gangs Lines too long Too many roller coasters - not enough variety in the rides Popular rides always broken or not operating for some reason Crummy food and drink Bad customer service - park workers are surly and unhelpful Parks not maintained - unkempt and trashy

Other than that it's a great place. /s

Back in the 90s Six Flags Great Adventure would still be open during the week after school started. That's when my friend and I would go. Rode the scream machine 8 times in a row without getting off. The Batman ride had only a 30 minute wait. It was the best time at a theme park I ever had.

The place had an unreasonable wait any other time. With tons of people and long lines.

Just build a separate “black” Six Flags in a different part of town.
