I remember seeing a large tree on Lyman Ward Military Academy’s campus that was struck by lighting and EVERY shred of bark was blasted off the tree. The tree looked like an ivory-colored piece of land corral.

Traditions notwithstanding, the Bible nowhere says to pray for the dead in general; Paul DID instruct to always keep on praying for all the Saints, and made no condition as to them being living or dead, though, so you CAN legitimately claim the Bible instructs prayer for the departed Saints of God, just not for the dead, generally.
Look, I’m not in the camp of some who seem to despise Catholics and Catholicism; I don’t talk trash about them or their traditions. But I must assert this immutable point: there is no Biblical support for the claim that the Magisterium has standing before The Throne of God to elevate Tradition to the level of bona fide Scripture; that’s extremely dangerous “sinking sand” as it institutes a post-Mosaic, non-Aaronic priesthood that illegitimately supplants the clear New Testament Order of Melchizedek wherein Christ Jesus serves PERMANENTLY (Hebrews 7:24) as our ONLY High Priest, and ALL SAINTS have membership in the priesthood of all believers (I Peter 2:4-9).
If there’s ONE PRAYER I pray for ALL Catholics it is that they would ALL become avid READERS of The Bible, and by that I mean ALL of the Bible; NOT merely the Daily Readings.
If you complete the daily readings each day for three years, you will read 15% of the Old Testament, and 71% of the New Testament, which is an OK start, but that means you will still be ignorant of 85% of the Old Testament, and 29% of the New Testament, and I submit to you that — for all who truly profess faith in Christ — this is unacceptable no matter what name is on the sign out in front of your church.
