The 80-year-old California liquor store owner caught on video opening fire at a would-be robber with a shotgun is now speaking out, saying "I did a lot of hunting when I was a little kid."
The incident early Sunday at Norco Market & Liquor in Norco, just east of Los Angeles, prompted the armed suspect to run out of his business screaming "he shot my arm off!"
"I would always protect my employees, my customers, myself. This instance, fortunately, I was here by myself, so I only had to worry about that. I took care of it and that was that," the store’s owner, identified by CBS LA as Craig Cope, told the station.
"I did a lot of hunting when I was a little kid," he added. "I'd put food on the table. So, I still remember things from a long time ago."

"Everybody works hard. They got bills to pay. These guys are going to come in and take it away from you. Not here." Cope told Fox11 LA that "there wasn’t much time to think about" the incident as it unfolded.
"When you point a gun directly at me and you are that close to me and I see what you are carrying I’m not waiting," he said.
The store owner also said the first indication he received that something was about to happen was when he saw the suspects "through the front door drive into this parking lot, but they didn’t park where a normal person would park, so that was a red flag."
"When I looked and saw them getting out of the vehicle, they got gloves, masks, a weapon, that just solidified the deal for me, I knew what was coming," he added.

And he spotted it right away and knew what was coming. Bravo!
(This is riverside county. They don’t do plea bargains.)
Good
Did they find the guys arm he shot off? I heard the old man kept it and was having it stuffed and mounted.
You need to see the story about being able to kill motorcycle thieves in brasil. Great video.
We need to get this old timer some 3” magnums so future DeShawns won’t have to be cared for and fed.
The man isa hero. They should have a parade in his honor.
Indeed and perhaps coming to a town near you. We have yet to hear much from Benedict’s illegals but it’s coming.
Which one?
I back into parking spots all the time because generally, backing out of them is far too risky.
If it’s not some person who just walks behind you expecting you to stop, or some little kid whose negligent parent lets RUN through parking lots, it’s some lazy deadbeat blasting by in their car looking for the closest parking spot to the store.
In those cases, not the kids obviously, the adults KNOW how difficult it is to see when backing out of a parking spot with huge SUVs blocking the view in both directions. And they don’t care.
There’s no courtesy any more. Nope, I refuse to pull in if I have the option to back in.
I am sorry the 80 year old had to go through this. Glad he was a good shooter.
I suggest more range time. I wish he would have blown the kids head off.
Yeah, I’m sick of this crime and no-punishment crap.
He did good but he needs to shut up and let his lawyer do the talking. It’s California so it’s pretty much guaranteed he’s going to get prosecuted or sued. I saw the video and it’s completely obvious that he was in the right but an all black jury will award the robber everything he’s got if it gets into court.
Need more range time with that shotgun; that arm shot should have been a head shot!
If they had done this in Pomona, they’d be out on no-bail right now.
They chose the wrong county. They chose poorly.
I frequently back in to parking spots when my wife is in the car with me, when it makes it easier for her to exit and enter the vehicle using a walker.
What I really want to know is.... did he shoot his arm off? That would certainly put a crimp in any future robberies the guy had planned.
He was on the radio show ‘John & Ken’ 640am radio show and explained what happen. He said he did not feel any adrenaline rush as he knew what was going to happen. He was also worried about what was going on in Los Angeles where the criminals are let go.
He told the story of him handcuffing a burglar he caught and calling the police to pick the criminal up. While waiting he asked the criminal why he does what he does and the criminal said it was his job, that he was a burglar.
The store owner says the only thing to do is lock these people up.
That rests on the assumption that these thugs aren’t part of a gang or thug family (i.e., loose collection of fellow thugs).
Note the perpetrator was armed with an “assault“ weapon. Does anyone believe it was obtained legally or would have been kept out of the hands of this thug by any of the any assault weapon laws being touted by the anti gun lobby? Consider the results if the liquor store owner had not been armed. What are the odds this 80 year old would have been shot dead or beaten to death by this thug?
