Suffolk University has a new poll out, including a question on Republican voter preferences for the 2024 presidential election, and while it is noteworthy that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is within 9 points of former President Donald Trump at 43%-34%, what is more striking is how little support the other possible candidates get.
Vice President Mike Pence is at 7%, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WV) at 3%, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 1%.
Contrast DeSantis’s strong second-place rank to where Republicans were at this point in August 2015. Trump was in front at 22%, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was at 13%, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker at 12%, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) at 7%, Ben Carson at 6%, Mike Huckabee at 6%, and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) at 5%.
There was no clear alternative to Trump.

If Trump and DeSantis do both run, Trump is going to be in for a primary fight far different than the one he survived in 2016.

DeSantis is the man Trump tried to be and superior in every metric.
Trump's last year in office was a disaster. The Swamp chewed him up and spit him out. Trump surrounded himself with backstabbers, imbeciles, and deep state swamp creatures. He handed the country over to Fauci and Birx, allowing them to crash his economy into the ground. He tried to pass a reparations package giving blacks a half trillion dollars. He lost the senate.
And on Election Day, he will be 78 years old.

DeSantis will get heavy media and GOP elite support — which will not help to endear him to the Trumpified GOP base. Trump’s most compelling point against DeSantis is likely to be to ask how DeSantis will be able to stand up to the media and to Washington’s hostility and treachery without any kind of experience in doing so.

Trump needs to win at all costs. The message needs to be sent to the Marxist domestic enemies of this country that the public does not support their occupation of our government nor their non-stop attempts to destroy it at every single level. If DeSantis runs and even wins, it will send the message that the Marxist domestic enemies have also won, that THEY decide who is acceptable and who isn’t. Well guess what? F them! They need to be sent the biggest middle finger that can possibly be sent and that would be Trump winning a second term
I think you are correct, but I don’t believe there is much chance of there not being more than one person challenging Trump for the nomination. It won’t be the double-digit gaggle it was in 2016, but my guess is that Nikki Haley at a Minimum is going to run. I don’t think she could beat Trump head-on, but she’d definitely take some votes from other challengers.

And yet , he is still running for governor anyway, and hasn't backed down an inch on any of his positions. Whatever he decides to do in 2024 or 2028 won't be affected by the degree of anticipated leftist opposition.
