Will DeSantis get the one-on-one shot 2016 candidates never did?
Washington Examiner ^ | July 31, 2022 | Conn Carroll

Suffolk University has a new poll out, including a question on Republican voter preferences for the 2024 presidential election, and while it is noteworthy that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is within 9 points of former President Donald Trump at 43%-34%, what is more striking is how little support the other possible candidates get.

Vice President Mike Pence is at 7%, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WV) at 3%, and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 1%.

Contrast DeSantis’s strong second-place rank to where Republicans were at this point in August 2015. Trump was in front at 22%, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was at 13%, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker at 12%, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) at 7%, Ben Carson at 6%, Mike Huckabee at 6%, and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) at 5%.

There was no clear alternative to Trump.

SNIP

If Trump and DeSantis do both run, Trump is going to be in for a primary fight far different than the one he survived in 2016.

The Lizard for president? I’ve got a better chance.

An actual lizard has a better chance. Especially a cute one like the Geico lizard.

Well, while we hate Mike Pence here on Free Republic, the rest of the world doesn’t share our disdain for him.

"Trump having residency in Florida complicates things."

Not a problem...Trump will simply change his residency to one of his other golf courses in a different state.

So much speculation given that Ron has already said he won’t run if Trump does. Are they hoping Ron will forever become a liar like Bush 41?

DeSantis never said this.

Indeed, Roger Stone had a fit precisely because DeSantis wouldn't pledge fealty to Trump.

What a waste of effort. Disantis is not running

They would destroy him as soon as he entered the race

After the midterms everything will be different win or lose

Anyway he’s not running. Anyone claiming to want disantis right now is just a trump hater.

Last I knew DeSantis was not planning to run if Trump ran. Has this changed?

Bullsh*t. Trump AND DeSantis, not Trump OR DeSantis in 2024, then DeSantis and .... in 2028 and 2032.

Have to say, that ticket is so damn' appealing. Can you imagine the dismantling of the deep state & swamp Trump & DeSantis could do in four years, and then DeSantis having a clean slate in 2028 & 2032 to advance the Conservative agenda?

It's a powerful argument, IMO.

DeSantis has young children. Would President DeSantis hold back on his agenda hoping the filthy leftists wouldn’t go after him as nasty as they did Trump, Kavanaugh, Thomas, etc.,

They're already going after him. They named him "DeathSantis" for crying out loud and accused him of murdering every elderly resident in Florida.

Cheney-Christie 2024!

If that's the GOP ticket, I'll go fishing on Election Day.

Looked at the replies to your post. Only one gratuitously offensive one, no. 10. That’s pretty good, because honest and good faith disagreement on this issue causes a lot of people on this forum to start foaming at the mouth

Honest question and I like DeSantis very much. I liked him in congress when he was just one of many but spoke his mind. I admire the job and things he is doing in Florida.

However, I am a bit concerned that the left-wing media appears to be cheerleading for this guy over Trump.

They don’t do anything like this without coordination and a plan (even a bad plan). What is their plan and why would they be pushing DeSantis even as they say he is Trump without the baggage?

If he were Trump without the baggage wouldn’t they be more afraid of him?

“Last I knew DeSantis was not planning to run if Trump ran.”

No, DeSantis has never committed one way or another.

Look out, Christie is closing in/sarc.

I’m personally okay with a Trump / DeSantis primary race. Maybe throw Rand Paul in the mix too. Competition is, in general, a good thing. Furthermore, multiple candidates might keep the media smear machine from focusing too much on one candidate.

What’s not a good thing is when candidates savage each other so much in the primaries that they go into the general election damaged. Let’s hope we can avoid that.

No way DiSantis runs if Trump declares. DiSantis will be Trump’s biggest cheerleader. All RINO media, especially the backstabbers at Fox, will be pushing the Trump v DiSantis narrative for ratings and to weaken Trump. Even it it’s only a narrative, these efforts will make it easier for Fox, et al to steal the ‘24 election like they did the presidency in ‘20.

I like this guy more every month.

He is very creative politically - with legislation, with executive actions, and even with judicial actions.

He recently convened a state wide Grand Jury to investigate Florida counties that are not enforcing state immigration laws or are not cooperating with federal immigration authorities.

Six months ago, I was certain DeSantis could not win a national election.

Today, I feel a lot more optimistic.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WV) at 3%

Must be a fake poll or a big mistake.

However, I could believe Liz Cheney at -3%.

Neither Liz Cheney nor Chris Christy are viable contenders for a GOP 2024 POTUS primary -they’d be out before they were in.

To include them in a poll makes me question the pollster(s) doing the poll. What could they be thinking????
