Gavin Newsom won’t save the Democrats
UnHerd ^ | Joel Kotkin

Burdened with a decomposing President and a clearly overmatched Vice President, the Democrats are on the hunt for a saviour. For many in the party, Gavin Newsom, the 54-year-old perfectly coiffed Governor of California, seems like the perfect solution. No doubt, given his recent trolling of Florida’s Republican frontrunner Ron DeSantis, he feels the same.

But Newsom’s ascendency faces some severe challenges. First, to get nominated, he must not only depose Biden, but also see off Vice President Kamala Harris. And she has three things Newsom lacks: she’s a woman, she’s black, and she has Asian Indian ancestry. Newsom, on the other hand, is white, was born into a well-connected San Francisco family, and is married to a film-maker and scion of a very wealthy Bay Area family.

Perhaps more importantly, things have not been particularly good for the minority Californians he was voted in to look after. In the Golden State, African-Americans and Hispanics do far worse economically than their counterparts elsewhere in the country. Black residents, on a cost-of-living basis, make about as much as they do in Mississippi, and far less than in states such as Texas, Florida, or Arizona.

Class may prove an even more glaring weakness. Newsom sees his state as a model, claiming California is “the envy of the world” and the great bastion of social justice. “Unlike the Washington plutocracy,” he boasts, “California isn’t satisfied serving a powerful few on one side of the velvet rope.” Yet he is the favourite son of what The Los Angeles Times described as “a coterie of San Francisco’s wealthiest families”, including the founders of the Gap clothing chain, the Pritzker’s and the Getty Family, who essentially adopted him, financed his business ventures, allegedly paid for his first lavish wedding, and helped launch his political career.

Meanwhile, Newsom’s green and progressive pronouncements contrasted starkly with his passion for the good life. He has long lived in luxury, first in his native Marin, and now in Sacramento. This caused Newsom some embarrassment during the height of Covid when he was caught partying in ways that violated his own pandemic orders at the ultra-expensive, ultra-chic French Laundry in Napa and more recently on a lavish family vacation.

If you’ve been following what’s going on in CA, including an attempt at a recall, why would anyone pick him as a candidate for anything? You don’t drive 10% of your people out of the state because your policies are good.

Newsome is the worst possible candidate except for everybody else. Apparently, he is not an Affirmative Action hire, so he’s got something going for him. Interesting to see the polling in California between him and harris.

But Newsom’s ascendancy faces some severe challenges. First, to get nominated, he must not only depose Biden, but also see off Vice President Kamala Harris.

Those tasks will be done for him by party insiders. Just as Bernie's candidacy was squelched... Twice... so the Biden/Harris re-election plans will come to an abrupt end.

It will be a cage match between Newsom and Beto in 2024, I’m stocking up on popcorn.

Newsom is history on the national political scale. He proved is lack of abilities as Gov of Ca. His family relationship with Pelosi has been a negative for him also.

This stuff is silly. If Biden doesn’t run, Harris will be the nominee. Newsome won’t challenge her. Beto is going to lose again in November and he won’t be viable for anything except maybe getting his old House seat back or a cabinet seat.

What would his campaign slogan be? “Vote for me and I’ll make the whole country like California”?

I would rather Newsom over any number of Rebuke candidates. I would take him over Pence for sure. Most likely over Christie. Not sure I very much care who wins if they are able to successfully steal it from Trump (The 2020 wrong must be righted otherwise they will always have their way).

But Democrats aren’t searching for a candidate - they are selecting a celebrity Royal to replace Obama as National Talk Show Host. Their voters don’t care about policy results - only intentions and feelings.

Yep, it’s hard to see how Newsom has such great national appeal. Based on the situation in California, how much will voters in “middle America” be impressed about the “great” job he’s done in governing California, as some great credential to make him president?

I wonder too, since Democrats are all about the “diversity” and all that, where does he fit in, as a heterosexual white man?

Newsom has BLM, Antifi, SEIU, Silicon Valley and the NEA all working for him and all active in the Bay Area.
Do NOT underestimate the power he has.
CA wants to control the USA voting and laws.

I wonder what is the Democrat plan for 2024? Assuming Joe Biden announces at some point he won’t run for re-election, then what? Does that set off a scramble for the nomination, or would Kamala be considered the heir apparent? Kamala checks off diversity boxes, and Democrats are all about diversity. Would they really push Kamala out to be replaced by a heterosexual white man such as Newsom?

But maybe that’s where Buttigig(sp?) comes in. Since Pete is a homosexual, he’s got that diversity going for him, which would perhaps override Kamala’s diversity.

2024 will be a replay of 2016 with a large field for both parties.

Because apparently he’s the only good looking male in the Democrat party. Besides a great head of hair the guy is a complete disaster.

“Newsom has BLM, Antifi, SEIU, Silicon Valley and the NEA all working for him...”

Meanwhile, Mexicans are destroying BLM, antifa, SEIU and replacing them with Mexican groups. Anyone thinking that the black racist groups are ascendant in CA just crawled out of a cave and is whistling past the graveyard. By 2023, Mexicans will be the No. 1 demographic in LA County.

Democrats plan to get rid of Harris for Newsom
Joe steps down illness of some type
Newsom replaces him
Selects new VP
New power game up and running for 2024
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
