Liz Cheney: Committee informed DOJ that Trump attempted to contact a witness not yet seen in the hearings

Rep. Liz Cheney, the vice chairwoman of the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection, said at the panel's hearing Tuesday that former President Donald Trump attempted to contact a witness who has not yet been publicly identified.

"After our last hearing, President Trump tried to call a witness in our investigation, a witness you have not yet seen in these hearings," the Wyoming Republican said at the conclusion of the hearing, which focused on ties between Trump and extremist groups that stormed the US Capitol. "That person declined to answer or respond to President Trump's call, and instead alerted their lawyer to the call. Their lawyer alerted us. And this committee has supplied that information to the Department of Justice."

As notable as Cheney's revelation is, she also raised the possibility that the incident could prompt interest from Justice Department prosecutors. The comments were the first time the committee has explicitly described providing information to the DOJ that they discovered during their probe.

Attempting to call a witness does not necessarily rise to witness tampering on its own, and it's unclear what if anything the Justice Department would do in response to Cheney's comments.

However, it's not the first public suggestion of witness tampering the committee has made. Previously, the committee noted two incidents where their star witness, former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, received messages about being loyal to Trump.

Those, however, weren't from Trump himself -- and Trump's personal involvement raises the stakes if the message was intended to impact a witness' testimony

It seems like the committee wants it both ways. Rules of a trial when they can trap Trump, but at the same time not a trial, so Trump doesn’t get discovery, mount a defense or cross examine witnesses.

An hour a so ago listened to NPR describe this as a “Bombshell”, this is a Congress investigation not a Grand Jury, much less a criminal trial.

I am beginning to believe we are into Soviet Union “show trials” much as I did not want believe that, despite what other posters here have said.

When I first joined FR, I had to debate a group who wanted to be the next Buckhead, throwing their articles about Obama's scandals around as if no one who wasn't a Conservative couldn't access them. BTW, most if not all have been banned.

That was bad enough.

Now we have to deal with all of this Jan 6 nonsense thanks to the Conservatives who wanted to recreate the storming of the Bastille, and were literally duped into giving the Democrats their Reichstag attack instead. To them, the Democrats say "Thank you."

It's nice to see we learned our lesson when the Democrats tried it again, but how could we have fallen for that?

How do we know he wasn’t calling Ivanka and asking her when she and Jared and the kids would be over for dinner?

Except this isn't a trial, so that statement was a lie.

You can be charged with witness tampering if the witness is testifying in any official proceeding and not just a trial. But since the person in question never answered the call we have no idea what Trump would have said to them so I don't see where proving tampering is at all possible.

Trump had better stop trying to contact his friends and colleagues. It is forbidden!!! Even if it's to wish them a Happy Birthday. He MUST sit in a room with no communications with ANYBODY or else!

BRING HIM FORTH!

If they can just get him on the equivalent if a jaywalking charge but on Federal property or business then he has a Federal Conviction. And cannot run for Federal office.

That’s one of the main (DEMS:Oh Please Dear G... er, god!)

They would get smoked in Epic proportions by DJT if they permit him to run again.

So you all called everyone every associated with Trump to be a witness and that includes his golf caddie who Trump called about a golf game and this is now called witnessed interference?

Since they so thoroughly stacked the deck against Trump in this "official" proceeding, I'd like to see them try.

Just because Trump did not know the person was a possible witness and just because he did not talk him does not mean that this can’t be used to create a headline that would make Trump out to be a criminal. You have to remember that being fair has nothing to do with all of this.

;)

And so Trump apparently does not have the right to attempt to contact this random person whom he had no way of knowing was on the witness list; but if he/she WAS on the witness list and IF Trump attempted to get them to alter his/her testimony, not knowing he/she was on some witness list, then that could be construed as interfering with hearings. But if Trump DIDN’T want to get him/her to change their testimony and DIDN’T know he/she was on a witness list, then this particular piece of meaningless innuendo doesn’t even qualify as irrelevant bulls**t.

Absent that, Liz Cheney is a particular vile form of vermin, and my sincere hope is that her political career is so far beyond destroyed that she’ll be lucky to get a job counting cattle at some rural railroad crossing in Wyoming.

Of course no names are given. This is most likely a straight up lie. And of course the left will be thinking “a ha! illegal!!” because when it comes to Trump, they’ve left any critical thought, or thinking whatsoever, behind.

The hearings have been such a bust that she needs to ramp up the bombshell narrative. Nobody gives a 💩! I just filled up my car and I paid over 50 bucks. The other day I was looking for eggs at target guess what folks there were no eggs to be had! That is what Americans are more worried about then a take down Trump at any cost fake J6 corrupt hearings. Nobody GIVES A FREAKIN DAMN!! Thank goodness in a few months she’ll be kicked to the curb!

I think they might really have him this time. No, really!

But seriously, why wouldn't he call someone on the list when they have subpoenaed every single person that he has ever known or worked with, including his family? When will they just get over it, get a life and go away?
