HIGHLAND PARK, Ill., July 4 (Reuters) - Six people were killed and at least two dozen injured when a rooftop gunman opened fire at a Fourth of July parade in the wealthy Chicago suburb of Highland Park on Monday, turning a civic display of patriotism into a scene of panicked mayhem.

They were in attendance at the parade to honor my friend Carolyn's mother, who passed away at 94 last week. My friend Carolyn, her mom, dad, and entire family attended that parade for years together as family.
Thankfully my friend Carolyn and her husband Bob are both OK. Very shaken up, but ok. She's very angry, and IMO has a right to be. Carolyn's very anti-gun. She knows I'm very pro-gun. She texted myself and another friend (the three of us worked together at Leo Burnett in Chicago for years) to let us know what happened and that she was OK right as the news was breaking locally.
We're very thankful she's ok, and very sad for the families of the six who died along with all the others wounded and those who are fighting for their lives at this very moment.
My friend Carolyn blames guns and asked me "how long are you willing to tolerate the status quo?"
I waited awhile before responding, when I did I simply said "I'm very angry at this too, and no one accepts the status quo, independent of one's feelings about guns."
After about an hour, Carolyn apologized stating she was angry. I understand that. She's lost her father to Covid, her brother to suicide and her mother to bone cancer in the same year. Followed by having to run for her life today.
Sooner or later, people like my friend Carolyn and all those Highland Park, IL residents calling into WGN AM 720 this afternoon will have to come to the realization that passing more and more laws won't fix this.
The "bipartisan" gun control bill that Biden signed last week didn't stop this. Frankly, it won't stop anything. Neither will seizing all the guns from law abiding citizens.
There is a deep, evil rift in this country right now. There is no one thing that anyone can do to "fix" this problem --- including gun confiscation.
This country needs to turn to God and ask for forgiveness for losing its moral compass.
Only then will Almighty God hear our prayers and heal our land.
There is nothing more we can do.

Almost all of the wounded are seriously wounded.
A 5.56 round can certainly cause death and damage of course.
But at 50-100 yards (the approx. distance of the shooter) a 7.62 round is devastating.
A Leg wound can be serious.
Also the sound of shots in the video don’t sound like an AR-15.
More like an AK variant.
Yes! Let's take that event and use for EVERY possible event as THE explanation as what occurred.
Good grief, what has happened to rational thought? I will make a suggestion. It's easier to blame it on a conspiracy. There's little proof that needs to be offered and those that push back on such a theory are either willing or unwilling dupes, toadies, etc.

They have tried banning guns. They should try banning Democrats and just see what happens. Like Trump asked, “what do you have to lose”.
We knew they would. The Reddit video sure sounded like a semi auto with high capacity. Not sure if it was firecrackers along with the gun shots. There must have been fireworks because it took time for them to realize the shots fired.
I have numerous AR-15s and AKs and SKSs.
I have my own gun range.
A 7.62 round cuts through a cinder block like butter.
A 5.56 round pokes a hole in one layer then fragments.
I guess it’s a case of pick your poison LOL.
Stats and testing by experts agree on the 5.56 round’s limits.
That would certainly be a first..
5.56 can take off an arm and fatal head shots don’t leave much intact.
