Brown University ‘mindfulness’ course offered only to minority students

A new course at Brown University has sparked controversy after it was offered solely to minority students.

The teacher training class in mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) was recently made available only to students who identify as Black, Indigenous or Latino. Anyone who identifies as BIPOC, regardless .. if they are a student at Brown

...

The exclusion of white and Asian students raised the ire of one anonymous Brown student, who was turned away from the MBSR program because they don’t identify as BIPOC. In a May 13 complaint filed with the Foundation Against Intolerance & Racism (FAIR), a “civil rights and liberties organization,” the student stated that “Brown is offering a RACE-BASED teacher training program that is ONLY open to certain demographics (black, latino, indigenous).

...

Bion Bartning, the president and founder of FAIR, called Brown’s course “discriminatory.”

“In a misguided effort, perhaps, to remedy past injustices, Brown University has decided to discriminate against students solely on the basis of skin color and ethnic background,” Bartning said. “Such actions are neither legally, nor morally, justified and we urge the university to reconsider its decision.”

...

Following the complaint, FAIR attorney Leigh Ann O’Neill sent a strongly worded letter to Brown University’s president, Christina Hull Paxson, on June 15, accusing the university of violating Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which states, “No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

...

Brown has since changed its policy to allow all students, not just minority students, to enroll in the class when it resumes in August.

Been my tagline for years.

LOL reminds me of the school that opened a new “Diversity Center” and a black student made a speech complaining that whites were in the center. “Diversity” apparently meant “No diversity, students of color only”.

I think all students who identify as BIPOC should be placed in separate but equal classes. Non-BIPOC students would have their own classes.

That would be a bit of a dilemma. I wouldn’t want to take such an idiotic course, but I sure as hell wouldn’t put up with being barred from it by racial discrimination.

I’m mindful that Brown needs to change their racist name.

I’m seriously considering identifying as a Native American.

Why not? Screw em. I say I’m a natural born citizen therefore I’m a native son.

I was born in America, thus a Native American.
I lived in Delaware, which is a tribe as well.
Therefore, I am a Native American of the Delaware Indian tribe.

Am I wrong for suggesting that, in this particular era, it might be better for Brown to teach its college students how to read and write before they offer a course in “mindfulness”?

I'm sure hordes of white students are lining up to enroll in this class. But do they realize that passing grades are only available to BIPOCs?

Just as Christians would get annoyed if a whole sect emerged that adhered to only ONE aspect of our Faith, Buddhists who know anything about their religion should be annoyed by the “Mindfulness” fad that has been introduced into Pop Psychology.

“Mindfulness” is only one practice out of “The Eightfold Path That Leads to Enlightenment.” There are seven others, most of which emphasize morality and ethics, such as “Right Thinking”, “Right Intentions”, and “Right Actions”. “Mindfulness” is way down near the bottom of the list.

Just as Christianity can not be separated from The Death and Resurrection of Jesus, or Yoga separated from Hinduism, or even Tai Chi from the Tao, “Mindfulness” can’t be separated from Buddhism without becoming a mockery of the religion of its origin.

Offering it as a College Course and then restricting admission on the basis of RACE is insulting to Buddhists, Asians, White People, Religion, and anyone stupid enough to sign up for the course.

And I’m sure that there were no “Right Intentions” involved in setting that whole thing up!

(For The Record, I am A Christian, but know a little bit about World Religions.)

Brown.....wouldn’t it be more inclusive if they changed the name to “University of Color”?
