Nine people were shot, one of them fatally, when gunfire erupted in Harlem overnight.
Seven men and two women, ranging in age from 21 to 42, were struck in the area of Fifth Avenue and East 139th Street just after 12:35 a.m. Monday.
The victims were enjoying a late night gathering when gunfire rang out.
One area resident told Eyewitness News there were so many gunshots she could not believe her ears.
"I was sitting in my living room and all I heard was sporadic shots ringing," she said. "It was like, 'Prong, prong, prong!'. And then it stopped and picked back up, 'Brum, brum!' You know, it was so many shots. First I thought it was fireworks. and then I thought, 'Nah, it can't be.'"
Police initially were told that two groups were shooting at each other at the scene.
"We just think it was a gathering, a barbecue, to that nature," NYPD Deputy Chief Brian McGee said.
Five of the victims were initially found shot on a footpath over the Harlem River Drive. The others arrived at Harlem Hospital.
A 21-year-old man was pronounced dead at Lincoln Hospital.

This happened in Blue America. So, clearly, this is proof it’s time to take more guns away from rural Red Americans thousands of miles away.
Democrat held territory
That’s not possible, New York has very strict gun laws and we all know gun laws work...../s
Just a bit of fireworks to celebrate the juneteenth holy day.
Not one Democrat will mention Gun Control
Did I miss the June 19 speech about the lack of fathers and crime in the troubled black family culture?
Nothing good happens after midnight
Oh well, nobody to blame. It'd be different if someone had fired a gun. But sometimes gunfire just "erupts" on its own.
“Gun Control” =
A - Lots of time at the range
B - Running target experience
C - Well constructed, Made in America holster
D - All of the above
“The victims were enjoying a late night gathering...”

Something about the phrasing and word choice here that makes it seem as if the author is refraining from saying something he or she came across in the process of writing the story that we might need to know to understand what really happened here, as opposed to some warped conclusion to which we are being led by the nose.
Im crying a river over my cup of coffee this morning.
Was thinking of that very phrase late last night.
semi is not auto.
Yup, my first guess. Heard there some celebrations in gun free D.C. with a couple folks dead. So, has “mass shooting” been redefined and I missed the memo? If more than one round is fired a mass shooting has occurred? 😕
Or after dark depending where you are.
Speaking of Harlem, I'm in the 125th Street area (near the Metro North tracks) quite often during the day. Never have any issues. One night, I decided to walk to that station after a Yankees game instead of standing in line to get onto the crowded subway cars. I survived but I'm NEVER doing that again. Totally different neighborhood after working hours.
Just another American sh&thole.
My dad was NYPD for 23 years and served about 10 years in the 23rd precinct at 123rd St and St Nick when he was a detective, other side of Harlem from you.
That was when Harlem was really a craphole (through the 80’s). Whenever i was going into the city I’d always park the car at the precinct, walk up a few blocks and take the A or D train downtown. Never had a problem.
It all about attitude- if you have the “don’t F with me look” they will leave you alone
