Nine people were shot, one of them fatally, when gunfire erupted in Harlem overnight.
Seven men and two women, ranging in age from 21 to 42, were struck in the area of Fifth Avenue and East 139th Street just after 12:35 a.m. Monday.
The victims were enjoying a late night gathering when gunfire rang out.
One area resident told Eyewitness News there were so many gunshots she could not believe her ears.
"I was sitting in my living room and all I heard was sporadic shots ringing," she said. "It was like, 'Prong, prong, prong!'. And then it stopped and picked back up, 'Brum, brum!' You know, it was so many shots. First I thought it was fireworks. and then I thought, 'Nah, it can't be.'"
Police initially were told that two groups were shooting at each other at the scene.
"We just think it was a gathering, a barbecue, to that nature," NYPD Deputy Chief Brian McGee said.
Five of the victims were initially found shot on a footpath over the Harlem River Drive. The others arrived at Harlem Hospital.
A 21-year-old man was pronounced dead at Lincoln Hospital.

Gunfire, the official fireworks of Juneteenth nationwide.
Actually the bigger problem here is the use of mass shooting. I THOUGHT the FBI classified a mass shooting as one where more than 5 are dead, not just injured. If true, this is proof they’re trying to change the narrative once again.
Mass “KILLING” is 4 dead, including shooter.
Mass “SHOOTING” is two or more injured victims NOT including shooter.
At least that’s what I’ve read. That definition is subject to change anytime in the next 17 seconds...or longer.
NEW YORK — A college basketball player was killed and eight other people were wounded Monday in an early-morning shooting at a gathering in Harlem, New York City police said.
Officers responded around 12:40 a.m. to reports of a shooting on a footpath along FDR Drive and found several people wounded. Other victims went to hospitals on their own, officials said.
Darius Lee, a 21-year-old senior at Houston Baptist University in Texas, was killed, the university said. He grew up in Harlem, attended St. Raymond High School for Boys in the Bronx and was home for summer break.
The wounded included six other males and two females, police said.
“This Father’s Day weekend is a weekend where people were supposed to be able to enjoy themselves with their families,” NYPD commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a news conference.
The investigation was ongoing Monday and police didn’t immediately have details about the gathering, possible suspects or what might have led to the shooting.
A gun was recovered from the scene, police said.
The New York Daily News reported that the gathering was a cookout organized by Harlem rapper Rich Rhymer, who posted invitations on his Instagram account. He noted that his two prior cookouts had been free of violence and wrote: “LETS GO FOR A 3PEAT.”
Lee, a guard and forward, played basketball at a community college in New York’s Sullivan County before enrolling at Houston Baptist University. He was scheduled to graduate in December with a bachelor’s degree in sports management, the university said.
Lee was recently named the university’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year. He led the team in scoring and rebounding last season, and finished sixth in the nation in steals per game, earning a second team All-Southland Conference selection. Lee scored 52 points in a quadruple-overtime victory last season, as well.
THe FBI must intervene in this serious federal crime committed without doubt by infiltrating white supremacists in Harlem, probably in blackface and openly carrying AR-15s.
Search for “mass shooting definition”
Every single top 10 page says that it “depends on who you ask.” There’s no specific definition, but the most common is where there are “a minimum of 3 or 4 victims of gun violence” (not including the shooter).
I find it funny that even a definition can’t pin a solid number. Is it 3 or 4? Or 10? Or 1?
They can’t come up with a definition, because if they did, it’s likely all of their narratives would get real muddy.
The "irony" of it being Juneteenth is beside the point. Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, it will be the same.
The ridiculous language has to stop.
“Mass shooting”. No.
The article even goes on to mention 2 parties shooting at each other.
That is not a classic “mass shooting/murder” incident.
That is common TARGETED RETALIATORY THUGGERY.
BBQ’s are usually gang-related
Mass MURDER, not mass SHOOTING.
They do like to conflate the 2 though. As if every mass murder is due to shooting and guns. Don’t let them control the narrative.
The best mass murders are through explosive devices, as every Moslem knows.
