Republicans need a leader without Trump’s 2020 obsession
New York Post ^ | June 19, 2022 | Rich Lowry

Posted on 06/19/2022 4:16:18 PM PDT by karpov

It’s understandable that Democrats would want to constantly revisit Jan. 6 — to invoke it, investigate it and sacralize it even.

It’s a mystery, at least from a certain level of abstraction, why Republicans would want to have anything to do with that day or want to fixate on the 2020 election.

The party is on the cusp of a midterm triumph, has enormous openings on the economy and education thanks to Biden administration stumbles and left-wing overreach, is making inroads among Hispanic voters and has a well-stocked political bench that Democrats should envy.

Yet the GOP is stuck litigating the past almost entirely because its putative leader in Mar-a-Lago is incapable of admitting error or defeat and will never stop trying to excuse and explain away his infamous conduct after November 2020.

You can argue that Jan. 6 wasn’t an insurrection; that the composition of the committee is unfair and lacks the adversarial element that has always been presumed to be central to the workings of such bodies; that the revelations or supposed revelations from the committee are being overhyped; and that Trump, whatever his failings, didn’t commit crimes and shouldn’t be charged with one.

In fact, I agree with every one of those propositions. But none of them makes Jan. 6 any better or makes it good.

It’s not quite true, as is often said, that every election is about the future. Republicans waved the bloody shirt of the Civil War for years. Democrats ran against Herbert Hoover for as long as they could. Republicans still talk about Jimmy Carter.

In all these instances, though, a party made a focal point of a low and embarrassing moment for the other side, not its own.

Observator, you are correct. We are in a bit of a Gordian Knot... we have to convince the people who rig elections that they are all suffering because of rigged elections and stop it. Now, when the rigged elections stop then comes accountability. So how do you convince someone who has been rigging elections that they are worse off if they don’t stop... Especially since someone who rigs elections is essentially a traitor... Now, those people who know they are dirty are looking for an escape route because they have supported a system that is breaking down for everyone... you need some kind of amnesty for the lower level folks, because those at the top are still comfortable with the misery they’ve caused because they are essentially godless sociopaths who see the world through the lens of a chemist who is trying to maximize the effect of their unique chemical reaction. Definitely the horns of a dilemma....

Rich Lowry always wants to be the loyal opposition, or bi-partisn as it’s sometimes called. F that.

Bull shiite, we need someone that knows the democrats will try the same stunt they got away with and is at least one step ahead of them.

They need kneecapping before they get started. A clear recollection of 2020 will help with that.

There may be a simple solution. Faced with horrible inflation, international crisis and a terrible President - RUN ON THOSE ISSUES. :)

If that means a billionaire with a model wife gets a bruise on his ego, that's a small sacrifice.

If we honored the original constitution, and had state elected senators, i bet you Trump wouldn’t have had gate keeper mitch picking all the people he’d let a vote on.

Lowry was a Never Trumper from the start. He needs to fade in irrelevance.

From the NY Post article: “Trump is acting on an entirely personal and selfish priority.”

I agree.

I’m sure Lowry is thinking about Romney, Christie, Graham, of Jeb.

Yeah? Try telling every victim out there to forget the crime that was committed against them. Good luck with that.

Indeed.

Need to campaign on why to vote for you, not cry-baby about something that will never be rectified (if it really was a problem).

No. The Republicans need candidates and office holders that put the country and their oaths far before themselves and who will fight whatever fights need to be fought to preserve the land of the free and the home of the brave.

The constitution gives nearly total control of elections to the states, so wouldn’t it make sense for Trump and his allies to be working at the state level? If they are, it seems to be a well-kept secret. Reliving what should have been done in 2020 isn’t going to help one damn bit.

So, a major bank heist in a small town, and the county police investigate for eight to ten years, and finally arrest the robber.

But a stolen national election, less than two years later? That's an "obsession."

Right.
