Mass shootings are a result of a confluence of factors, but at the heart of the problem are guns—of which the Philippines has plenty. Firearms are sold openly in malls, and almost anyone can carry them, even priests and accountants.
For now, though, powerful social factors continue to have a restraining effect on indiscriminate violence. Philippine academic Raymund Narag, a criminology associate professor at Southern Illinois University and a former prisoner himself, says mass shootings in his native country are in part deterred by hiyâ, a Tagalog word meaning shame or embarrassment. Avoidance of hiyâ, and sparing one’s family and community from it, is often described as a core Philippine value.

I saw the same thing in Idaho; a girl of about nine with four younger kids in tow visiting a McDonalds. All very well behaved. They arrived on bicycles which they parked unlocked along the side of the building.
Not so homogenous. Muslims are a fair-sized minority (6-11%
depending on the source), as are Protestants. Must be 1,000 languages, literally. Development ranges from primitive, barely contacted jungle people to the most densely populated city on Earth, a small section of which is as modern as anywhere in America. There’s an indigenous “negrito” population (think Black Australian aborigines; a huge, longstanding population comprised of various Polynesian groups; and a sizeable Chinese minority, including 3 million relatively pure Chinese, plus up to 20% of the rest of the country having some Chinese blood.
... also, Kirishitans (Christians) who fled imperial Japan, Arabs, Indians, Spaniards (mostly intermixed, however), 1% Americans...
We need more hiyâ here in the US.
They’re not even a little homogeneous. There’s about 150 groups they consider “indigenous”, not to mention that fact that conquered and colonized many times and everybody left a little something behind.
You’re wrong.
Fun fact about Sulu: The Star Trek character, Sulu, was named after this sea. He was NOT supposed to be from Japan, or Japanese-American, but was supposed to vaguely represent East Asia. Sulu isn’t even pronounceable in Japanese; he is called Kato in many Japanese, and Suuruu in others. (There is no “l” in Japanese, and “U”s would be implicitly silent... or so I’ve read; I don’t know Japanese myself.)
It can be. Except now it's called bullying or harassment, regardless if the person deserves it, and law enforcement is called. Walk around like a freak, and a person shouldn't be surprised that people view them like a freak. Takes this idiot, Matt Walsh Interviews a Trans-Wolf
Likewise, I also believe manners started to nosedive when it became a major legal issue for punching someone in the face when they were excessively rude.
This goes back nearly 50 years, but I was once on a shopping street there, and a thief stole an item from a shop. As he ran out the owner started shouting, and before the thief could get to the end of the street, all the other shop owners came out with bats and stopped him
It sure is.
It sure is.
Well the accountants will keep track of how many times they fired and their shell casings.
EVEN priests & accountants???!!! OMG...
And the priests are prepared to make sore that when they give somebody last rites, it’s the VERY last rites!
That line struck me funny too.
And for every legal gun there are probably 20 illegal guns stored in someone's closet.
But every once in awhile someone goes amok, usually with a machete, and kills his family or fellow workere
And of course there are druggies that kill in home robberies...fewer of them now that Duterte took over.
And don't get me started on politicians who ordered hits on their rivals..
Indeed, some of the murders blamed on Duterte were families who ordered hits on someone who murdered their relative but bribes to the courts kept them out of jail.
It is safer since Duterte took over which is why Marcos won over the one backed by the American elite. However, the cops also stop cars and motorcycles to check for guns and raid houses of drug pushers. Lots of security guards with guns all over, and to get into the mall you get you bags checked and go through a metal detector...but that is actually because of fear of terrorist bombs, not guns,
The Philippines is diverse... because here someone from another area who speaks a different language is a foreigner...
And China has quite a few people working in their industries and casinos in cities.
Would probably be a good idea for them to take a gun safety course before posing for this picture. . .
Ok, follow up question. Was the United States generally homogenous when it was 95% white people back in the 1940s?
“Mostly CATHOLIC.”
Like Mexico?
Oh no.....Phillipine is WAY more Catholic than Mexico!
