‘Top Gun: Maverick’: Tom Cruise Delivers the Goods
PJ Media ^ | 11 June 2022 | Ed Driscoll

Posted on 06/11/2022 3:04:54 PM PDT by Rummyfan

As arguably America’s last remaining movie superstar, it’s hard to call any Tom Cruise movie a “surprise” hit, but Top Gun: Maverick has had surprisingly powerful legs in its second week at the box office. But much like the way they turned out en masse for Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper, American audiences are thrilled to finally see a military-themed movie that’s pro-America.

While it has its weaknesses, Top Gun: Maverick is superior to the original 1986 movie in many ways. I had never seen the original until last week, in order to get up to speed (pun intended) before watching the sequel on the big screen. Why didn’t I see it in the ‘80s? I think I was turned off by the MTV videos created to help sell it and the original middling reviews, such as this clip from Siskel & Ebert at the Movies...

Watching Top Gun on Netflix, I was reminded of its ‘80s production values; it plays like an extended MTV video, with erotic shots of F-14s that recall Dr. Strangelove’s opening credits, with a mating B-52 and tanker plane — but without the irony. The ‘80s music score, all Yamaha DX-7 synthesizers (then-the state of the art digital instrument), drum machines, and guitars through Scholz Rockmans also contribute to the Reagan-era feel. I didn’t care about the characters; the recent death of Ray Liotta reminded me that I cared far more about the gangsters and hit men of Goodfellas and Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction than daredevil American fighter pilots on the front lines of the Cold War because the writing and directing of the former movies were so good. The contrived Kelly McGillis subplot didn’t help matters....

Cruise’s Jack Reacher - I did not like. I’ve read all the books, and while movies do require a suspension of disbelief - Cruise is no Jack Reacher. He’s about a foot shorter and maybe 100 lbs. lighter than the character of the books. So I couldn’t suspend my disbelief.

Now Amazon’s “Reacher” - that’s Reacher.

I always thought he was slighted by not even giving him a best supporting actor award for “Rain Man,” where I thought his part was stronger than Hoffman’s retard part.

First off any movie where the writers don’t do there homework on the subject they are writing about is a movie that sucks. The movie was full of misinformation on EMP and science. Very obvious misinformation for even the lightly educated.

Saw it last night. The real statement for me was the refusal to follow authority and the fact that there are people like me who goes forward with a certain conviction and that "my way" is risk taking but with huge rewards.

The refusal to be mandated like sheep is the best example.

The action was great but the real message was most important.

I could not care less if hollywood made a movie I liked. I hear the new Top Gun movie is good but I will never see it.

Bottom line, there is only one best way I can hurt leftists. Do not give them my money. Now that is impossible to do all the time but that is why I want a parallel society. Put a guns welcome sign in the window? I will enter. Put a sign that we are catholic and denounce pride month? I will spend in your store.

Economic punishment is really my only weapon at this point since government at all levels has become totalitarian.

So if a conservative filmmaker made a socially conservative movie, you would refuse to watch it?

Do you draw a distinction between movies in the theater and movies or shows streaming on your tv?

If you watch nothing at all, fine. In fact, I’d be moderately impressed. I went for years without darkening the door of a theater and still don’t go very much, and I never watched much tv. But I will confess that I was never a total abstainer.

If you know how scientology works, you know he must give them large amounts of his money, the more he makes, the more he will give them. He IS part of the 99% of Hollywood creeps. It’s just another flavor.
Scientology is that fouled up. So much has been exposed now. Eventually I think people will be shocked as the really bad stuff will come to light in time. They can’t keep secrets forever. Sooner or later human nature prevails and someone will escape with evidences no one can deny. My personal belief is Epstein was an amateur criminal compared to them.

If the movie was independently distributed than of course I would go see it. But now, this is a situation where a parallel society has been created, one that is separate from the pedophiles in hollywood. This is what we should aspire to build.

He is obviously not giving his paycheck to them or he wouldn't be worth $600 million.

He IS part of the 99% of Hollywood creeps. It's just another flavor.

Nope.
And I don't remember Tom Cruise being charged with any criminal offense to do with Scientology either. And Tom Cruise has been about one of the best behaved Hollywood stars for a very long time.
What more ya got?

Again, Scientology’s show pony. They will keep their cash cow looking clean and protected as a high priority. One of the most secretive cults in America. See what happens when people just stop on the road that goes through their compound in Hemet. This is BIG money and power. You’ll see in time. The human spirit will eventually prevail and expose all as victims eventually will have their day. Bill Cosby was America’s Dad for decades. Even talked a conservative game now and then. Appearances don’t mean jack in Hollyweird.

Again I don't really care about Scientology one way or another.
If Scientology as an outfit commit any crime, its up to the police to handle it.
Again, as far as I know, Tom Cruise has never been arrested, let alone charged with any crime to do with Scientology.
Tom Cruise as a free individual can join any religion he likes.
Again Tom Cruise is a great guy who makes great movies that I like.
Again, Top Gun Maverick is a great very highly enjoyable movie which has bad overwhelmingly great
reviews from those who have seen it.
Again I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see a great very enjoyable movie.
Again if you want to fight with Scientology, feel free to carry your very sorry ass to the Scientology headquarters and have a moan there.
Can you get all that?

I don't know much about Cruise's home life or his politics (although yes he's a Scientologist). But he makes very entertaining movies. The last Mission Impossible was the best action flick of the past ten years.

He has been in a string of good to very good movies.

And yeah, I liked Edge of Tomorrow too (Emily Blunt didn't hurt it either).

Was she the Girrl power Warrior Princess? I'm sick of them putting women into "warrior" roles. That was the main thing I *didn't* like about Edge of Tomorrow.

The plot was good, but they always got to do some grrrrrl power or gay power or black power or some such nowadays.

Just watched Jurassic World over the weekend. The old actors were phoning it in, the movie simply redid some of the popular tricks they did in the past, the plot wasn't very creative, but it did of course have the various heroes of "diversity" in unlikely roles.

I've heard it is going to be the last one, and I have to say it's the worst one they've done so far. I'm glad they won't be making any more of them.

I hadn't read the books. Cruz may not be tall in stature, but he's pretty tall in his own mind. He's pretty full of himself and you have to give him that.

His Reacher movie(s)? were okay for someone not familiar with the character as written in the books. I was entertained.

Tired of the Jurassic Park series over a decade ago - same story over and over, people in danger of being eaten by Dinos.

I can voice my opinion as much as anyone in a public forum. Can you get all that?

Mark my words, Cruise will be exposed one day how much he knew. It may be years from now, but it will happen.
