Teacher wounded in Uvalde shooting says he will never forgive police

A teacher wounded in last month’s mass shooting at a Texas elementary school said he will never forgive law enforcement for waiting more than an hour to stop the gunman who killed 19 students and two teachers.

Arnulfo Reyes, hospitalized after being shot twice during the May 24 massacre at Robb Elementary School, spoke of his anger toward police during an emotional interview that aired Tuesday. He described feeling abandoned by officers who stood in a hallway even as students begged for help in repeated calls to 911.

“After everything, I get more angry, because you have a bulletproof vest. I had nothing! I had nothing,” a crying Reyes said in a segment broadcast on “Good Morning America.” “You’re supposed to protect and serve. There is no excuse for their actions.”

In his interview with ABC, Reyes detailed the horror that unfolded in his classroom as he and his students hid under tables waiting for help. The fourth-grade English and language arts teacher said May 24 was “going to be a good day,” with students receiving awards during a ceremony at the school.

Some of the students went home after the ceremony. But 11 stayed at school, and Reyes put on a movie for them in Room 111. Suddenly, shots rang out.

“The kids started asking out loud, ‘Mr. Reyes, what is going on?’ ” he recalled. “And I said, ‘I don’t know what’s going on, but let’s go ahead and get under the table. Get under the table and act like you’re asleep.’ ”

He was gathering them under the table when he turned and saw the gunman.

He fell to the floor and decided, “I’m going to act like I’m asleep also.” He said the Lord’s Prayer and the Hail Mary and “prayed and prayed...

A few years ago I underwent a school-shooting training exercise program put on by our local sheriff’s office. The program is called A.L.I.C.E. They made a point of showing that hiding under desks with the shooter in the room with you means you are dead.

If it gets to that point, we were told you mob rush the shooter with anything that comes to hand. Some lives may be saved. I’m not criticizing the teacher, but rather the training he apparently received.

Schools regularly train for events that are not likely to occur. Fire, tornado, earthquake and now violent intruders. The first three are all pretty much S.O.P. but apparently work needs to be done on the last. Hiding makes sense if the threat is on the other side of locked doors, but if it is with you, and running away isn’t an option, you have to fight it, fight for your life and your students’ lives.

Ok, the police were Co-Conspirators in the late term abortion of 19 children, get over it. And remember this until the day you die:

Police Officers have NO LEGAL DUTY to protect the citizenry, their ONLY legal duty is to the political entity that Employs them.

In Kansas, it was “tornado” drills. Out in the hallways, head to the wall, kneeling. That would be a safe spot if the roof caved in. You might have a broken back, though. Probably doubled as a nuke drill...mid-‘60s.

These citizens ought to bide their time. Wait until the moment is right and then exact some revenge on these cops, like maybe a good curb stomping on a dark night.

Hiding makes sense if the threat is on the other side of locked doors, but if it is with you, and running away isn’t an option, you have to fight it, fight for your life and your students’ lives.

That sounds similar to the Active Shooter training videos we had to watch for a retail job. We were told to fight for our lives if the "active shooter" traps us in a room.

Thankfully, we never had an "active shooter" situation, but I noticed the other workers were lax about the other training we received. Example: If a child was lost, employees were supposed to position themselves at every exit. A few times, I radioed that a child was missing. While I helped a parent search and/or watched one exit, no one blocked the other exits. One father was running all over the store yelling for his little girl while customers walked in and out of the store freely.

It's like no one ever believes something will happen where they are. No one expects an abduction at their store. No one expects mass murder at their school.

Uvalde schools had a rule that classroom doors were to be kept locked at all times. Obviously, no one followed that rule... because everyone believes the bad things only happen somewhere else.

Escaping through a window would’ve been a better idea, although the news reported that police were breaking windows to help the kids escape. Did the windows not open?

I keep wondering about doors. Did this classroom have a door that locked? If so, did the killer still get through the locked door?

It seems everyone there was caught by surprise, and they were completely unprepared.

It seems to me that the FIRST thing to tackle is to harden schools, LOCKED DOORS, safety check systems, resource officer at front door. It's non controversial and it will make a difference and we can do it today for almost NO additional money. It's such a good idea, nobody is talking about it.

Indeed, those are inexpensive solutions very easy to put into place. But, when we talk about them, immediately the Dems and the media shut us down.

The problem with having the classroom doors locked at all times is the reality of everyday life in a classroom. Kid goes to the bathroom. Has to knock on the door to be let in. Kid or teacher has to stop what he’s doing to let him in. Kid has to fill his water bottle, same thing. Kids coming back from special ed classes. At least three or four interruptions every hour.

I'm not a biologist, but it seems to beat getting interrupted ONCE by a mentally deranged shooter.

Your points are well taken. Locked doors aren’t a perfect plan. No plan ever is.

But, Uvalde school put that rule in place. If not the classroom doors, then at the very least, all the doors into the building should’ve been locked.

Yes, but if that once is a vanishingly rare event (in spite of what the media would have you believe) then people are going to live their lives accordingly. Most of us drive, although the chances of getting into a fatal accident is much more likely than a school dealing with a mentally deranged shooter.

The school I taught at had a student that was pretty much ‘off’. He was (and is) very much into guns which his parents have thoughtfully provided him. Every time there was a school shooting, all of us who had him as a student called up his name in our minds.

On another occasion a staff member’s ex went on a shooting rampage killing his new wife and for a while we thought he might be coming for his ex as well. So I have seriously turned over the school shooter scenario in my mind.

This is how our school’s system works. As soon as an intruder is noticed his location is broadcast to the whole school. Local L.E.O. is called. Anyone near the intruder locks and barricades doors with desks and furniture. Anyone at a distance evacuates students and runs to the woods (it’s a rural area). Of course, the resource officer is supposed to engage the intruder.

Teachers are trained to try to secure the door even if the lock is broken, shot, etc. if with nothing else a belt looped around the door knob. If the intruder is actively trying to get through the door, get as many kids out the window as possible. If he actually gets into the room try to stop him with whatever is at hand.

Hiding under desks is not one of the options.
