WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer swiftly set in motion a pair of firearms background-check bills Wednesday in response to the school massacre in Texas. But the Democrat acknowledged Congress’ unyielding rejection of previous legislation to curb the national epidemic of gun violence.
Schumer implored his Republican colleagues to cast aside the powerful gun lobby and reach across the aisle for even a modest compromise bill. But no votes are being scheduled.
“Please, please, please damnit - put yourselves in the shoes of these parents just for once,” Schumer said as he opened the Senate.
He threw up his hands at the idea of what might seem an inevitable outcome: “If the slaughter of schoolchildren can’t convince Republicans to buck the NRA, what can we do?”
The killing of at least 19 children plus a teacher at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, has laid bare the political reality that the U.S. Congress has proven unwilling or unable to pass substantial federal legislation to curb gun violence in America.
In many ways, the end of any gun violence legislation in Congress was signaled a decade ago when the Senate failed to approve a firearms background check bill after twenty 6- and 7-year-olds were shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Despite the outpouring of grief Wednesday after the starkly similar Texas massacre, it’s not at all clear there will be any different outcome.
“We are accepting this as the new normal,” lamented Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., on “CBS Mornings.” “It’s our choice.”

My honest opinion?
I don’t like it.
And this is why: We constantly cede ground to the anti-gunners but they never cede ground to us. You know how a racheting wrench works. Same thing.
I’ve been in Illinois and I’ve had an FOID before. While in that system and in that state, it was relatively painless, the antis will NEVER be satisfied, and you just ceded a lot of ground to them... and now the national FOID tightens and tightens and tightens.
Better to fight them absolutely at every stage. By not ceding universal background checks, for example, they cannot know for sure where the firearms are, making confiscation quite difficult.
No, they have no reason too because the vast majority of gunowners are law abiding.
Punish criminals and lock up nut cases and throw away the key.
Sandy Hook- no wounded, no stretchers, no attempts at resuscitation.
Uvalde- many wounded, many evacuated, obvious attempts at resuscitation.
There are no mass shootings without survivors.
Most people will think FOAD when you write FOID.
That's all you've ever given me in 23 years, and that's all I've ever asked. I appreciate it.
I don’t like it. And this is why: We constantly cede ground to the anti-gunners but they never cede ground to us. You know how a racheting wrench works. Same thing. I’ve been in Illinois and I’ve had an FOID before. While in that system and in that state, it was relatively painless ...
We have a three-day waiting period. For everything, even ammo and gun parts. The gun store takes your money, checks your FOID card, and you have to go back three days later to pick up your box of .22 ammo. A common ploy in blue states. This would eliminate that waiting period. So yes, they'd be ceding that ground to us. Also, it takes CCP discretion out of their hands. The federal FOID card would function as a CCP in all 50 states. They'd cede that ground as well. And that's a lot of ground.
... the antis will NEVER be satisfied, and you just ceded a lot of ground to them... and now the national FOID tightens and tightens and tightens.
I agree, they will never be satisfied until all of us law-abiding citizens are completely disarmed. But this takes the center away from them, and the center wins all elections from now until the end of time. The anti-gunners would be a small, loud, petulant minority throwing highly visible temper tantrums, on the very rare occasions that some mass shooting would still happen.
Better to fight them absolutely at every stage. By not ceding universal background checks, for example, they cannot know for sure where the firearms are, making confiscation quite difficult.
Well then, we'd still have waiting periods in the blue states. It would still be virtually impossible for ordinary citizens to get a CCP in blue states. A lot of conservative law-abiding people live in blue states. Me, for example. As I pointed out for Freeper JimRed, no firearm registration is involved, and simply owning an FOID isn't probable cause for a search. They wouldn't know where the guns are.
Heard on the news today that he got in by an unlocked back door.
I guess it’s old home week here on FR.
Given that 25 states in the Union now have Constitutional Carry, we’re actually better off now than we were when I first joined here.
Not that my state is on the right side of that but I expect that when Mark Robinson is elected Governor in 2024 that we’ll get CC.
We don’t win by giving up our rights or or freedoms.
Give them nothing. Take back the rights that people gave away years ago trying to appease the left.
They hate us and they want us dead. To get there, they first have to disarm us. They’re okay with getting it incrementally.
So no. No FOID. No asking FedGov can I pretty please have my gun. No lists. No permit. No waiting period.
No.
I’m with Knitebane. No ceding any ground, no matter if we gain some in the process. NO CEDING GROUND.
There’s a problem with your thought:
It is as if someone sees you with a cake, and says, “It’s not good you have a whole cake. Give me a piece.”
And he keeps coming back with the same line.
Eventually, he has the whole cake.
We don’t ever gain ground against the antis.
Why should we ever concede any ground?
No waiting period for guns or ammo. All 50 states.
Concealed carry license, valid in all 50 states.
Expedited (24-hour) issue of the license for anyone who's a petitioner with an active order of protection.
No gun registration, even in states that have it now, so they don't know where the guns are, so they can't confiscate them.
Furthermore, nobody is giving anybody any "cake." We'd still have the right to own any weapon that is currently legal, including the AR-15 and AK-47.
Look, if we could all get exactly what we wanted, and nothing we didn't want, my position would be the same as yours. But we're opposed by people who control the media, the education system, and the entertainment industry. They are well-organized, well-funded. (Take a look at "Influence Watch." Left-wing NPOs outnumber conservative NPOs by about 10-to-1, and they've been brainwashing people longer than you or I have been alive.)
We have to win the center to win elections.
Still a big NOPE from me.
