Will Congress act on guns after Sandy Hook, Buffalo, Uvalde?
The Associated Press ^ | May 25, 2022 | By LISA MASCARO (D-AP)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer swiftly set in motion a pair of firearms background-check bills Wednesday in response to the school massacre in Texas. But the Democrat acknowledged Congress’ unyielding rejection of previous legislation to curb the national epidemic of gun violence.

Schumer implored his Republican colleagues to cast aside the powerful gun lobby and reach across the aisle for even a modest compromise bill. But no votes are being scheduled.

“Please, please, please damnit - put yourselves in the shoes of these parents just for once,” Schumer said as he opened the Senate.

He threw up his hands at the idea of what might seem an inevitable outcome: “If the slaughter of schoolchildren can’t convince Republicans to buck the NRA, what can we do?”

The killing of at least 19 children plus a teacher at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, has laid bare the political reality that the U.S. Congress has proven unwilling or unable to pass substantial federal legislation to curb gun violence in America.

In many ways, the end of any gun violence legislation in Congress was signaled a decade ago when the Senate failed to approve a firearms background check bill after twenty 6- and 7-year-olds were shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Despite the outpouring of grief Wednesday after the starkly similar Texas massacre, it’s not at all clear there will be any different outcome.

“We are accepting this as the new normal,” lamented Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., on “CBS Mornings.” “It’s our choice.”

Shall Not Be Infringed.

Teach morality, pray in schools, teach the 10 commandments, and get gun-play banned from TV and movies.

Federalism is dead.

Congress is out of bounds and the federal government is controlled by crooks.

The problem is the US public school system, which is government run factory reeducation camps.

They fail in EVERY metric, from education, Marxist indoctrination and safety of the children.

Ya, please take the guns away from the good guys so the bad can kill more of us Ugh Democrat idiots.

You don't understand. To Democrats WE are the bad guys. Those of us who want to be armed represent a serious threat - perhaps the most serious threat - to their plans for a totalitarian state that would be considered excessive by Kim Jon-un. Until we're disarmed and made helpless their government jackbooted goons and their masters will always be somewhat afraid that if they go too far one day they may get up in the morning and instead of returning home will end up in the morgue.

> How’d this murderer get the gun?

By going through a NICS check at a regular FFL (dealer).

Question for us:

What good is a NICS check on a guy that just turned 18?

I couldn't agree more. The Illinois FOID law has been challenged and found by the courts to be constitutional.

Teach morality, pray in schools, teach the 10 commandments, and get gun-play banned from TV and movies.

Again, I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately we run into that "freedom of expression" issue. You would also need to ban "first person shooter" computer/video games, such as Call of Duty. Good luck.

I can share what I know about the shooter in Uvalde, TX.

Salvador Rolando Ramos. (There goes the "white supremacy" and "replacement theory" argument from the lunatic left-wing fringe. His family is the type of people the lunatic left-wing fringe wants to replace us with, according to that theory.)

He was a gamer who played Call of Duty every chance he got. He worked at Wendy's & creeped out his co-workers. He was living with his grandma, who was in the process of evicting his psycho mom. He got into an argument with his grandma, because he didn't graduate on schedule. He shot her to death, then put his guns in the car and headed to Robb Elementary School.

Regarding the transgender question, even the left-wing Washington Post has admitted that Ramos was bullied at school for wearing eyeliner.

Ramos turned into a loner, avoiding any type of conversation. His mom's boyfriend (don't these moms almost always have a boyfriend?) said he moved in with his grandma after a huge argument with Mom about WiFi usage. (The kid was always playing Call of Duty. Always.)

This would satisfy the gun grabbers (I think), without violating any constitutional rights.

They will never be satisfied until all of US (not them) are disarmed. But ANY requirement for a permit or registration is an infringement.

If you can't be trusted to be armed you shouldn't be running around loose.

PUNISHING MILLIONS for acts of a few mentally ill persons is NOT the right answer.

OPEN THE MENTAL HOSPITALS & USE THEM !!!!!1

Oh. That’s constructive. Not.

I’m not talking about banning any type of gun, or any type of ammo. And my proposal would knock a lot of wind out of the sails of the lunatic left-wing fringe. It would make it virtually impossible for a random nutball like Mr. Ramos, or Adam Lanza, or Seung-Hoi Cho (the Virginia Tech shooter) to get their hands on any firearm.

We’d get about five Democratic senators and 20 Democratic congressmen on our side. That would be more than enough. Biden would sign it, if somebody put it in front of him. Right now. Today. We wouldn’t have to wait until after the 2024 election.

But you go ahead and keep that attitude toward conservative people like me, who are also your allies whether you accept that fact or not ... and watch in horror as a completely united Democratic Party passes another “assault weapon” ban: this one permanent, rather than lasting just 10 years. Miss Kamala Harris has the tie-breaking vote in the Senate.

Hell, they might even try to repeal the Second Amendment. But you go ahead with that attitude, cowboy.

Chuck you, scumbag. Not even a period of mourning for those poor kids.

It's almost as if they wanted it to happen so they could move their anti-gun agenda forward.

The lunatic left-wing fringe takes great joy in the suffering of others. Fear and pain can turn to anger very quickly. Expect an assault weapon ban, written by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, co-sponsored by some Democratic Latina from Texas. It would pass in the House. Right now. Today.

May God bless Joe Manchin, and grant him a long life.

As I said, the Illinois FOID law survived constitutional challenges. And I'm not talking about registration of anyone's guns. Mere ownership of an FOID card is not probable cause for a search. That's been litigated too.

If you can't be trusted to be armed you shouldn't be running around loose.

I couldn't agree more, but now we're talking about lots of money. Hundreds of billions of dollars a year, to house and supervise all these mentally ill people and convicted violent felons. And there would be a constitutional issue with such a law. Advocates for the mentally ill would get free lawyers from some leftie non-profit group, just like illegal immigrants do to plead their "asylum" claims, and they'd probably win if the judge was nominated by Obama or Biden.

Americans will not submit to hysterical neo-Nazi gun-grabbers.

In 2014, 130,000 gun owners in extreme leftist Connecticut refused to register their battle rifles under threat of fines, confiscation and imprisonment. They told the leftist Nazis: Come and get ‘em. The weenie gun-grabbers crawled back into their ratholes and squeaked.

This is a horrible event, but that many people are murdered in Chicago every weekend and not one seems to give a crap.

Priorities I guess.
