Ukraine: Russia must withdraw to pre-war positions for talks

Ukraine’s president said Wednesday that Russia must pull back to its pre-war positions as a first step before diplomatic talks, a negotiating line that Moscow is unlikely to agree to anytime soon.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he currently sees no willingness on the part of Russia to resume earnest negotiations on ending the three-month war.

“At the beginning, there was an impression that we can move ahead, that there would be a certain result or some outcome of those talks. But it all has stalled,” Zelenskyy said through an interpreter by video link to attendees at this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

It’s in the final stages of being done. You should try reading the news once in a while.

--- "Putin needs to accept he has no path to victory. The longer he waits the worse position he will be in."

The conclusion you offer supposes the war is merely about Ukraine. Given the damage Europe and the "world's policeman" -- so says Biden and neocons like Gingrich -- are doing to their own economies, and given that withdrawal of energy supplies which have been delivered to Europe from Russia are now deeply affecting parts of Europe economically and socially, and given that the green politics of the European Union and their unelected Commission is failing economically, it may well be that this is not a matter of Putin losing. It may well be that Europe and the US are also losing. Sometimes a win isn't simply a matter for the military. And the old saws hold -- war and business are diplomacy by other means.

Being required to choose Putin or Zelensky is not my favored debate. There were and remain more than two choices, and the future is not fixed between just two oligarchs, for that is what both are.

Zelenskyy needs to shut up, he has been bought and paid for. Any decisions beyond what to eat for lunch is decided well above Churchill’s pay grade.

Listen Ivan you propaganda kook, there is NOTHING wrong with attempting to set a position for negotiations, except to an immoral Putin licking lackey.

Death to Putin. Death to the Russian pigs.

Zelensky could not even be elected dogcatcher today in Ukraine. His countrymen blame him for the mess he’s gotten them into. He and his darlings in Nato brought this on themselves....

Another tough Neocon bellowing from the safety of his basement. Do Blood Dancers like you ever fight in the wars you cheer for, or is that strictly for other people's kids?

Has Zelensky taken a look around?? Russia has reduced the Donbas and the eastern border to rubble. Negotiate what?

This border war has been going on for 14 years. The people of Donbas have asked for a referendum.

Russia owns the Black Sea now.

They own the bottom of the Black Sea, at least, since they have the most warships there.

Not a bad proposal even it the Russians may (and surely will) scoff at it.

It eliminates the complication of “territory gained” being held over Zelinskiyy’s head or used in a bullying way as a mere bargaining chip.

It give Putin a way to 1) graciously withdraw from a conflict that has clearly gone haywire and produced profuse military and political bleeding, and 2) demonstrate “reasonableness” in such a way as to quite possibly induce a complementary stance of good will on the part of Zelinskiyy and allow other world leaders to cease foolishly demanding war crimes trials and withdraw threats of placing Russia on a permanent footing of being a pariah or virtual among nation states.

Sounds like Russia will need to keep pushing West, then.

Who says he has “no path to victory?” The media? Why would you believe the media about anything at all?

“It’s in the final stages of being done. You should try reading the news once in a while.”

Explain how? What event could happen in the next months that would force Ukraine to surrender. Given that Ukraine has:

* 90% of its territory
* Is mobilizing all military aged men (~4 million soldiers)
* Has western funding larger than the entire Russian defense budget

Okay, explain the path to victory. What can Russia do that would force Ukraine to surrender?

Didn’t realize that, but makes sense. Thanks!
