Putin the 'meddling colonel': Russian president is making tactical decisions as Ukrainian forces drives his army BACK to the border and top Kremlin propagandist says offensive in Eastern Ukraine has FAILED

Vladimir Putin is dictating on-the-ground troop movements in Ukraine as his army falters, according to Western military sources.

General Valery Gerasimov is also said to be making similar tactical decisions, micro-managing the war in minute detail which would normally be overseen by a colonel.

'We think Putin and Gerasimov are involved in tactical decision-making at a level we would normally expect to be taken by a colonel or a brigadier', said a Western military source, according to The Guardian.

The same source said that Russian battalion tactical groups (BTGs) had been 'battered', adding: 'If Putin is doing the job of a brigade commander' then 'he could be delving into a force that could be as small as 700 to 1,000 soldiers'.

Putin's soldiers have so far failed to achieve their military objectives in eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces have been attempting to mount a breakthrough in order to encircle Ukrainian troops in the Donbas region.

Officials believe Putin's decision to take personal control of on-the-ground troop movements could be contributing to the military failures.

Radio jamming has forced Moscow to send more battalion leaders to the front line in order to communicate with their troops, only for Ukrainians to take advantage by killing Russia's generals - with 12 confirmed dead.

The news comes after Ukrainian soldiers became the country's first to reach the Russian border after retaking Kharkiv from occupation.

Ukraine’s ministry of defence said on social media that the 227th Battalion of the 127th Brigade of its military had reached the border with Russia, marking the closest Ukrainian soldier's have come to their neighbour since it was invaded on February 24.

The Russo/Finnish War of 1939/40 comes to mind.

The Russians blundered into that and got their tails kicked royally until the Red Air Force just bombed Helsinki to ruin forcing the Finns to surrender.

I see parallels of that today with the current situation although certainly this isn't 1940.

He also ordered one of his best soldiers, Rommel, to kill himself. For failure or disagreement?

Rommel was implicated in the plot to kill Hitler..........

But looking at it from the positive Russian perspective, they’re killing lots of Ukes and especially civilians.

Well, it’s obvious you do not know history. Rommel was implicated in the July 20 Plot. Because of his war record and service to Germany, he was given the chance to commit suicide, and spare his family shame.

Its not that I don’t know history, its that at 83 I’ve forgotten a lot of history. Fifty or 60 years ago when I learned about Rommel’s suicide I seem to recall it being said he was offered the choice of killing himself so Hitler didn’t have to do it and make him a martyr, or else his family would also suffer. I guess it falls in the category of disagreement. ;-)

Yep. In a battle between a false narrative and reality, reality wins every time. Like I’ve been saying to a lot of people on both the left and the right regarding our fog of war with this Ukraine thing, the truth will come out in the end.

Only to the extent that you originally said Rommel was ORDERED to kill himself. Hitler gave Rommel the choice: Commit suicide and you will be given a funeral deserving of a German warrior, and your family will not be mistreated; or you will be treated as a traitor and will suffer a traitor’s ignominious death, and your family will be persecuted.

One can argue that that was no choice at all. But, stripped to the bone, it was.

At least he escaped the firing squad that von Stauffenberg faced, or the truly ignominious death of being hanged with piano wire as so many other “plotters” suffered.
