Its not that I don’t know history, its that at 83 I’ve forgotten a lot of history. Fifty or 60 years ago when I learned about Rommel’s suicide I seem to recall it being said he was offered the choice of killing himself so Hitler didn’t have to do it and make him a martyr, or else his family would also suffer. I guess it falls in the category of disagreement. ;-)

Only to the extent that you originally said Rommel was ORDERED to kill himself. Hitler gave Rommel the choice: Commit suicide and you will be given a funeral deserving of a German warrior, and your family will not be mistreated; or you will be treated as a traitor and will suffer a traitor’s ignominious death, and your family will be persecuted.
One can argue that that was no choice at all. But, stripped to the bone, it was.
At least he escaped the firing squad that von Stauffenberg faced, or the truly ignominious death of being hanged with piano wire as so many other “plotters” suffered.
