HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A California coastal panel on Thursday rejected a long-standing proposal to build a $1.4 billion seawater desalination plant to turn Pacific Ocean water into drinking water as the state grapples with persistent drought that is expected to worsen in coming years with climate change.

The state’s Coastal Commission voted unanimously to deny a permit for Poseidon Water to build a plant to produce 50 million gallons of water a day in Huntington Beach, southeast of Los Angeles.

Poseidon said it was disappointed in the decision.

“California continues to face a punishing drought, with no end in sight,” a company statement said. “Every day, we see new calls for conservation as reservoir levels drop to dangerous lows. We firmly believe that this desalination project would have created a sustainable, drought-tolerant source of water.”

The vote came after a heated meeting before the commission attended by dozens of supporters and critics of the plan. It was considered a crucial decision on the future of the plant after years of other hearings and delays.

No internal combustion engine cars, insufficient electrical grid and generation and lack of water. Turn California into more of a hell hole than it is.

I heard part of the justification, is that desalination returns the by products back to the ocean, and pollutes the ocean.

But the by products they are concerned with, are the salt and brine and other substances which were in the sea water in the first place.

Their view is that we are adding pollutants to the ocean, by returning substances back to the ocean which were there originally.

Eco kooks have the mindsets of toddlers.

“But mommy, why do we need this? Everyone knows if you want water you just turn on a faucet.”

Despite its beauty there is a reason native Americans did not occupy the southern California coastal areas. Their history states that it wasn't suitable because of drought. They instead lived in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest.

Nothing has changed.

Here is the meat ....

"Poseidon’s long-running proposal was supported by Gov. Gavin Newsom but faced ardent opposition from environmentalists who said drawing in large amounts of ocean water and releasing salty discharge back into the ocean would kill billions of tiny marine organisms that make up the base of the food chain along a large swath of the coast."

What ever power the Coastal Commission has has been asigned to it by legislation. The Democrats control all aspect of the State Government. If they wanted to overrule this commission they could.

If they don’t then that means the Democrats do not want the desalination plant.

The argument was that it would make the ocean saltier.

Yep, used to travel there on business a few times a year - didn’t like it back then, and its been all downhill since - they won’t see me anytime soon spending any $$$ there.

I hope all the tree hugger climate eco-freaks will enjoy fighting off their new South American ‘neighbors’ for the Evian water they have stockpiled in their garage.

Reminds me of that animal rights lady that said we should not be killing animals and should, instead, get our meat from the grocery store. 😂

It is a lot more fun howling about “climate change” after you have sabotaged anything that could help people get the water they need.
