Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) calls $40 billion military aid package to Ukraine a "gift” and blocks it from passing.

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) blocked the passage of the $39.8 billion House-passed Ukraine aid after Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) presented a unanimous consent on behalf of himself and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell today.

Schumer urged Paul to pass the bill and claimed that the Senator from Kentucky wanted to add certain changes directly to the bill, which have been opposed by members of both parties.

“He is not even asking for an amendment. He is simply saying my way or the highway,” Schumer said.

Paul asserted that the aid amount will almost equal the entire military budget of Russia and that the U.S. will have to borrow the money from China to send it to Ukraine.

He stated that there are domestic priorities to tackle right now with inflation reaching a 40-year high and gasoline hitting a 48 percent high since last year.

“My oath of office is to the national security of the United States of America. We cannot save Ukraine by dooming the U.S. Economy,” Paul concluded

Correct, Rand blocked “unanimous consent”...now the bill has to go thru the normal debate/voting process...a few days delay. Hopefully goes down...but not likely.

I support helping Ukraine but even I think forty billion is too much.
We should have sold them weaponry BEFORE the invasion started.
Ukrainians prove every day that they don’t much help.

Rand Paul needs to be the Senate Majority leader.

He’s got the fire in the belly.

His figures are a bit off... Russia has spent between 60 and 90 Billion per year the last several years (we cannot guess the true number, as Russia’s military spending doesn’t work like ours - their government still act somewhat as “owners” of many defense suppliers...

But the spirit behind Rand’s blocking of this is admirable.

They could finsh the wall for 1/4 the cost.

Not sure how they logically justify it.

They can’t. So they will just resort to the same ol uniparty tactics.

Ukraine is now the USA’s 51st State.

Uncle Sugar is underwriting everything - “aid” is now paying government Ukraine salaries, military salaries, paying for weapons (of course), MREs, everything.

“How about 40 billion to complete the border wall?”

How about 20 Billion Dollars? You can make a very good wall for 20 Billion Dollars.

We are fumbling our way towards economic collapse and I get the strong impression this is actually the plan, then in the chaos bound to follow, martial law and all sorts of other nasty things. I hope enough people wake up before November to prevent this from continuing. Factor in more election fraud and even that might not be good enough.

I sympathize with the people of Ukraine but their government seems oblivious to reality in terms of perhaps accepting a reasonable compromise and end to this crisis, maybe we should make that a pre-condition of significant financial aid and in any case 40 billion seems excessive. Russia should be paying, and if not voluntarily, then through tariffs and confiscations. This is their fault and they seem to have no sense of responsibility, something that the U.S. government ignores preferring to prattle on about impossible outcomes like trials for war crimes. Who is going to arrest the guilty parties?

This whole thing as somebody said earlier smells like a cover up of some other agenda and the money is going to bounce off walls and into pockets sure as night turns to day.

$40 billion in aid designated for use by Ukraine would have sufficient numbers of strings attached to instantaneously be spent on things and services happily provided by Friends of Brandon (and of Mitch and of Schumer and of Pelosi, etc., etc.).

Dems said we didn’t have $5 billion for Trump’s border wall, but we do have $40 billion Ukraine.
