A new study of monozygotic twins raised apart in South Korea and the United States provides unique insight into how genetic, cultural, and environmental factors influence human development. The new research has been published in the scientific journal Personality and Individual Differences.
“I have studied identical twins reared apart for many years. They pose a simple, yet elegant experiment for disentangling genetic and environmental influences on human traits. This case was unique in that the twins were raised in different countries,” said researcher Nancy L. Segal, a professor and director of the Twin Studies Center at California State University in Fullerton.

The researchers found “striking” differences in cognitive abilities. The twin raised in South Korea scored considerably higher on intelligence tests related to perceptual reasoning and processing speed, with an overall IQ difference of 16 points.

> “stupider”?
Public skool, “more stupiderer.”
Somehow you knew that was coming. Those stupid religious Christians in the US are dumbing-down everyone's intelligence.
To my knowledge, this is the first ever study to challenge dozens of separated-twins-with-same-IQ studies.
Maybe they were separated because the Korean father wacked the American-raised kid on the head with a cricket bat, causing his mother to run back to America with him, but the other twin was over at a friend’s house at the time, so missed the plane.

Just wait until the get
two, three, four times.. “more stupiderer.”
That’s public skule. See what happens when you get ejukated in America. But those Kardashians sure are hot.
Intelligence is strongly genetic. Like 95%. And several % from being breast-fed.
Howver you can *reduce* effective IQ with bad nuture. Meaning - bad food and drink, not so much bad education.
For completeness - it’s also possible that the IQ tests used in this case introduced artefacts.
Well put.
The twins were born in 1974 in Seoul, South Korea. One of the twins became lost at age two after visiting a market with her grandmother. She was later taken to a hospital that was approximately 100 miles away from her family’s residence and diagnosed with the measles. Despite her family’s attempt to find her, she was placed into the foster system and ended up being adopted by a couple residing in the United States.
Note that measles can impair intelligence, as could other environmental factors, such as lead.
I disagree with the breast milk part.
Only that some women are not able to produce good milk. Having a supplement will improve the outcome of the kids in the case where a Mom isn’t able to supply their dietary needs.
Our kids were in that boat, and we had a new doc try to guilt us into breast feeding when our oldest just wasn’t getting enough. An older doc called and said to use formula to help fill in the gaps. Kid went for lethargic to happy in one feeding.
This reinforces other studies I’ve seen that culture directly affects IQ scores.
I’ve seen studies of US blacks in the German educational system.
They have much higher scores than American blacks in the US educational system. Difference is culture.
Whatever nature provides in the way of intelligence requires education in order to develop to the fullest. South Koreans are famously hard-working and serious-minded, including in the education of children. The result is a population that is intelligent and a country that is highly productive and well-ordered.
Chinese made products...OK,they're mainly cr@p.But not Japanese or Korean goods
Yeah, but the California twin is woker, which is the desired result...
This has more to do with funneling money to the supporters of liberal government than it has to do with any concern for the children.
I agree that the factories are good. But I am talking about the office workers.
I’ve seen the setup of a very typical Japanese office. It is basically a long table that everyone works at. The boss sits at the head of the table and everyone else works at the sides. No cubicles, no privacy. Everyone is observing and can hear everyone else for 10+ hours a day. It would make me crazy.
And the US spends more $ per pupil than any other industrialized nation. I’m sure the Teacher’s union will do everything it can to suppress this research.
