Russians to dress Ukrainian POWs in uniforms for Mariupol parade: official

Russian forces are planning to dress up thousands of Ukrainian prisoners of war in military uniforms during next week’s Victory Day parade in Mariupol, a Ukrainian official claimed Thursday.

Petro Andryushchenko, an aide to the mayor of the besieged port city, wrote on his Telegram channel that officials have learned that nearly 2,000 Ukrainians are being housed in three filtration camps in the hamlet of Bezimenne, which he likened to “ghettos.”

“These men are held there and they are told that they will be made to wear the Ukrainian [military] uniform and to participate in a so-called ‘war prisoners parade’ in Mariupol because they [the Russians] lack actual prisoners of war,” the adviser said on a national newscast, Ukrainian media reported.

“It will be a grotesque crowd scene for another propaganda image,” he added.

The Russians certainly do their best to show their primitive and savage mentality, no different to North Korean or Chinese propaganda.

Although theyre called “prisoners of war” the later implication is that they are civilians being made to dress as soldiers.

“Russian forces are planning to dress up thousands of Ukrainian prisoners of war in military uniforms during next week’s Victory Day parade in Mariupol, a Ukrainian official claimed Thursday.”

Or:

“ “These men are held there and they are told that they will be made to wear the Ukrainian [military] uniform and to participate in a so-called ‘war prisoners parade’ in Mariupol because they [the Russians] lack actual prisoners of war,” the adviser said on a national newscast, Ukrainian media reported.”

______________

One statement says it’s going to be Ukrainian POWs and the other statement say the Russians lack actual POWs.

“Aren’t they already wearing uniforms?”

They’re probably going to make them wear some kind of pajamas.

Are they POWs or just civilians?

Looks like the Russians are forcing civilians to dress up as soldiers.

“Russian forces are planning to dress up thousands of Ukrainian prisoners of war...”

Sounds like the Ukrainians are SURRENDERING in much larger numbers than the media wants us to know.

Wouldn’t this be against the Geneva Convention?

Although theyre called “prisoners of war” the later implication is that they are civilians being made to dress as soldiers.

Either they are uniformed combatants and entitled to be treated as POWs, or they aren't and thus aren't entitled to the protections of the Geneva Convention that are extended to Prisoners of War. One or the other.

If they are POWs, it is a nice gesture to issue them fresh uniforms. If the aren't, then they probably should be tried and treated as criminals.

If they are POW’s then this is absolutely against the Geneva Convention.

Pure Propaganda fantasy dictated by Ukraine and dutifully written down by the Drive-By Media.

You are engaging in double think. A trip to room 101 is in your near future.

The situation seems to be that they are Ukrainian civilians being dressed as Ukrainian military members.

The author doesn’t understand the definitions of terms such as “POW” and apparently assumes that anyone taken prisoner in the course of a war is a “prisoner of war”.

My guess is that they fall under Article 4, Paragraph 6:

“6. Inhabitants of a non-occupied territory, who on the approach of the enemy spontaneously take up arms to resist the invading forces, without having had time to form themselves into regular armed units, provided they carry arms openly and respect the laws and customs of war.”

Article 13 might be implicated by the parade:

“Likewise, prisoners of war must at all times be protected, particularly against acts of violence or intimidation and against insults and public curiosity.”

The uniforms are covered by Article 27 and are required to be provided by the Russians:

“Clothing, underwear and footwear shall be supplied to prisoners of war in sufficient quantities by the Detaining Power, which shall make allowance for the climate of the region where the prisoners are detained. Uniforms of enemy armed forces captured by the Detaining Power should, if suitable for the climate, be made available to clothe prisoners of war.

“The regular replacement and repair of the above articles shall be assured by the Detaining Power. In addition, prisoners of war who work shall receive appropriate clothing, wherever the nature of the work demands.”

In any event, the Russians aren’t shooting these prisoners like the Ukranians have been videoed doing.
