Israel has summoned the Russian ambassador and demanded an apology over remarks by the Kremlin foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, that Adolf Hitler “had Jewish blood” and that the “most rabid antisemites tend to be Jews”.

The remarks were part of Lavrov’s defence of Russia’s policy of “denazification” in Ukraine, the Kremlin’s term for a sweeping purge that Ukraine says is a pretext for “mass murder.”

In an interview with Italian TV, Lavrov was asked to address how Russia could say it needed to “denazify” the country when its president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, is Jewish. .. “As to [Zelenskiy’s] argument of what kind of nazification can we have if I’m Jewish, if I remember correctly, and I may be wrong, Hitler also had Jewish blood,” Lavrov said

“His words are untrue and their intentions are wrong,” said the Israeli prime minister, Naftali Bennett. “Using the Holocaust of the Jewish people as a political tool must cease immediately.”

Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust memorial, also condemned Lavrov’s remarks as “absurd, delusional, dangerous and deserving of condemnation”.

Lavrov’s comments showed that Moscow has forgotten, or never learned, the lessons of the second world war.

Ok but what about Lavrov’s assertion that Hitler himself had Jewish ancestry?

- Hitler’s lawyer claimed this in his post-war autobiography
- the Telegraph did DNA tests on Hitler’s relatives that suggested he may have had Jewish ancestry (and African also)
- I read somewhere (can’t recall where) that Hitler was concerned about allegations in this regard and had the laws defining Jewishness written to exclude himself (and, most ridiculously, Jesus Christ as well)
- Hitler’s father was born out of wedlock, father unknown. Hitler’s paternal grandmother was working in the household of a Jewish man at the time, which gave rise to the rumors.

So who knows if it is true, there certainly is no conclusive evidence. But to call it a “conspiracy theory” that should never be repeated is ridiculous.

So who cares? The point is that Lavrov is demonizing Jews to justify his country’s genocidal war. Hitler committed genocide - it’s his actions that make him a monster, not his ancestry. Same for the monster Putin and his creepy ghoul henchman Lavrov.

I agree entirely that the truth of the matter should be of no importance. But what I object to is the gaslighting, labeling every factual allegation that one disagrees with, or disagrees with the motives for, a conspiracy theory. That is an anti-intellectual approach to control speech that we are seeing increasingly across the board (but obviously on far less sensitive subjects than the uniquely horrible subject of the Holocaust).

Hitler's lawyer Hans Frank wrote a memoir in which he said he was asked to investigate the claim by Hitler himself in the 1930s and that he uncovered some evidence there was a Jewish relative.

This was to some degree confirmed by more recent research in Belgium that examined the DNA of a number of Hitler relatives and found that

"the relatives’ most dominant haplogroup, known as E1b1b, is rare in Western Europeans but common among North Africans, and particularly the Berber tribes of Morocco, Algeria, Libya and Tunisia. It is also one of the major founding lineages of the Jewish population, present in 18 to 20 percent of Ashkenazi Jews and 8.6 to 30 percent of Sephardic Jews."

The Russians have also long claimed to have held onto some partial remains from Hitler's body, so its possible they've conducted their own separate DNA analysis and reached a similar conclusion. Lavrov may have been trolling with his comments, but there was bait on the hook.
