US won’t rule out military action if China establishes base in Solomon Islands

One of the most senior US officials in the Pacific has refused to rule out military action against Solomon Islands if it were to allow China to establish a military base there, saying that the security deal between the countries presented “potential regional security implications” for the US and other allies.

Ambassador Daniel Kritenbrink, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, was part of a high-level US delegation to the Pacific country last week.

He said the US team, which also included the National Security Council coordinator for Indo-Pacific affairs, Kurt Campbell, had a 90-minute “constructive and candid” meeting with prime minister Manasseh Sogavare in which the US team detailed concerns about its recently signed security deal with China.

Temper tantrums and invasion threats over Solomon Islands deal with China will push Pacific allies away Read more “We wanted to outline for our friends in the Solomons, what our concerns are,” said Kritenbrink. “Prime minister Sogavare indicated that in the Solomon Islands’ view, the agreement they’ve concluded has solely domestic implications. But we’ve made clear that there are potential regional security implications of the agreement not just for ourselves, but for allies and partners across the region.”

I will tell you this the beginning: I am unabashedly pro-American... but that is because I am American, born-and-bred, my family has roots going back over a century, my wife and children have roots going back to when the United States were British colonies. Were for some reason I were born in Russian or China, I would be unabashedly so as well.

So, let me give you a thought-experiment: suppose the West had lost the Cold War, and the USSR was the dominant force in Europe. Suppose the USSR had expanded the Warsaw Pact to Cuba, and was on the cusp of inviting Mexico. Now remember, the Warsaw Pact was a purely defensive pact, same as NATO. Would you sleep soundly in your bed knowing that nuclear weapons were 15-minutes from Miami, less than an hour from the East Coast?

Would you accept a 2,000 mile front-line on your very borders and first-strike capacity within an hour of your Capitol? Because that is precisely what you are expecting Russia to accept with the admittance of Ukraine to NATO (approximately 1500 miles).

No country that considers itself a world power would accept that.

Such a great idea letting these progressive clowns steal the election.

What were they thinking asking China for help ?

Maybe they took a good look at what a dumpster fire this country has turned into lately and thought it might be prudent to go a different direction.

P.S. your list above is spot on.

Can’t figure out why Prime Minister Sogavare of Solomons thinks it is a good idea?

MONEY. China can bribe and others can’t, not directly for the benefit of the PM. Oh sure, lots of aid money and such but no boxes of cash, gold or silver for the PM.

This is another one of those things that has trouble written all over it. The Solomons are strategic now just as they were in WWII. You probably do recall that Guadalcanal is one of the Solomon Islands that the First Marine Division fought so hard to win. Seems the people and especially the PM of the Solomons have forgotten all about that. For sale then and for sale now? Probably.

I understand why Russia has a problem with NATO at its door step, but the fact is that NATO was not going to invade Russia and Ukraine by itself was not a threat to invade Russia. If they chose to do so Russia could wipe Ukraine off of the map. I realize there were or are strategic reasons behind Russias invasion of Ukraine many that we the public don’t know or understand. However China in the Solomons is a whole different ball game. They have absolutely zero reason to be there other than to further their plans for domination of the Pacific.

Refusing to rule out military action is standard for a competent negotiating team. No big deal. If Biden had done that with Putin instead of preemptively surrendering the option, Ukraine might look different today. The problem here is that the US and Australia have failed to take care of business in the Pacific archipelago, attending to the interests of these strategic islands, and now are in the pathetic position of trying to make up for past foreign policy failure. Good luck convincing the president of the Solomons to unwind the deal with China after the fact. Fat chance, Blinken you imbecile.

Sadly, I’d imagine you’re right.

China seems to have the cash to push these things through,
and I’m not sure we can keep up in the long term.

If some financial crunch doesn’t take a bite out of China,
things are going to get very rocky over the coming years.

We have our faults, but I pitty the planet if China continues
to rise. It’s very tough on its own people, so other shouldn’t
be too surprised when they go rogue on them.

I will concede the point; Russia (vis-a-vis Ukraine) and China are not the same. If you want my opinion, Russia is a fortifying power, trying to keep its place in the world, whilst China is an expansionist power, trying to expand its place in the world.

The crux is that both are agitating at the same time due to geopolitical straits they find themselves in. Russia, in the next 20 years, baring something unforeseen, will likely become a strong regional power with a potent nuclear arsenal, not a world power as they have been... China, in the next 20 years, will simply implode unless they can find women and material outside their current borders.

It’s a dangerous time, fraught with peril, and my fear is that our current leadership is not up to the task.

So to fight Biden and the so called Globohomo you are going to ally with ACTUAL Communists like Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Kim Jung Un and Castro, and Islamic radicals like Ayatollah Khanemi? That is stupid and dangerous, and will end up with billions dead or enslaved.
