Jenna Ellis Defends Disney Views as Ex-Trump Lawyer Takes Conservative Fire
Newsweek ^ | 4/24/22 AT 4:58 AM EDT | KHALEDA RAHMAN

Jenna Ellis, a former attorney for former president Donald Trump, is taking fire from conservatives as she continues to defend Disney's right to criticize a Florida law.

Earlier this week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill that revoked Disney's self-governing privileges in the state.

The bill has been widely viewed as retribution for the company's criticism of Florida's new law, dubbed "Don't Say Gay" by opponents, which bars instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade.

Ellis, who was hired by Trump as a legal advisor in 2019 and later part of the legal team that tried to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election, has called DeSantis' actions "over the line" and offered her legal services to Disney.

On Twitter, Ellis has been fending off criticism from conservatives over her stance.

"You can't be woke enough to pacify leftists. Turns out you can't be MAGA enough to pacify the right," she wrote in a tweet on Saturday.

In another tweet, she wrote that the "same conservatives upset at the govt for trying to punish Hobby Lobby are now cheering that the govt is trying to retaliate against Disney for exercising its right to political speech and oppose legislation. The rule cannot be 'It's fine when I disagree with the speech.'"

That is the essence of negative rights in America.

Obama found those “negative rights” bothersome.

Disney did far more than criticize the proposed (now passed) law. They threatened to use their influence to override the legislation and get it withdrawn.

Is Jenna Ellis carrying President Trump's water on this?

NO.

I stopped following her on social media months ago as her posts became increasingly bizarre. (She always gave me a bad vibe in her media appearances; she uttered banalities with overblown confidence and simply could not think on her feet.) My conclusion: she's a grifter with mental health issues.

With her track record “defending Trump in courts” I thunk Disney may pass on her offer.

Jenna Ellis, divorced after two months of marriage, claims her ex husband wouldn’t follow their Churches Christian teachings. No kids = no skin in the game other than money and politics. She is a self serving SCUMBAG.

Just the other day DeSantis reiterated his position that he won’t run if Trump does, so that rumor is unlikely to be true.

My sources are people who are actively involved and whose political work most people here would like. Politically-informed people.

Somewhat like the Republicans’ failed attempt to tax colleges and universities that have at least 500 students and at least a $50 million endowment, exempting any qualifying college or university that didn’t accept government money?

There is only one such school, and I am proud to say it’s my alma mater.

Well it wouldn’t surprise me if Trump sees DeSantis as a possible rival, l just don’t think that has anything to do with this woman helping the Disney groomers.

she wrote that the "same conservatives upset at the govt for trying to punish Hobby Lobby are now cheering that the govt is trying to retaliate against Disney for exercising its right to political speech and oppose legislation. The rule cannot be 'It's fine when I disagree with the speech.'"

I don't remember Hobby Lobby benefiting from any sort of sweetheart government deal. If they were, they deserve to lose it. I oppose all sweetheart deals. But, what I remember was the government stepping in to punish Hobby Lobby for how they conducted their business, preventing them from taking actions which they wanted to take. I don't think government should do that.

But I see Disney with a wonderful sweetheart deal, which they deserved to lose. The state didn't step in to punish them or to tell them how to run their business, or to prevent them from taking any action. All the state did was say, "You want to play politics? Say goodbye to your sweetheart deal."

I think Jenna Ellis is a fool and probably not a good ally for Trump.

BTW -- it's NEVER a level playing field. The Left will ALWAYS reward their friends and punish their enemies. The Right tries too hard to always be "fair". That's unilateral disarmament, and I oppose it. The Left plays hardball? We should play hardball. Times 100.

Yes,Disney has the legal right to criticize the law.But their inclination to do so shows an utter,a despicable, amorality. That amorality has caused me to decide to boycott everything Disney.

Disney World,Disney movies, movie discs and movie downloading and streaming, the ABC television network,ESPN,etc are now ignored and banned in my household.

DISNEY = GROOMERS

Trump positioned himself in the past as a ‘pro LGBT’ Republican so its not that out there to speculate. His administration continued the policy of meddling in foreign countries affairs bullying them into becoming ‘pro LGBT’ through threats of economic sanctions and cutting off aid and he at least didn’t lift a finger to stop them.

“Disney’s right to criticize”

I don’t its “right” to criticize is being challenged, just its choice to criticize. What are its “rights”, and how are they being threatened?

I see what you mean. But legally, I think an issue would be, that Disney doesn’t have any constitutional right to the special treatment they have had all these years.

To pass a new law which simply treats Disney as any other business, legally speaking, shouldn’t trigger constitutional issues.

Of course lawyers can argue any legal angle they think can help a client. Disney legal counsel has been working overtime to find such angles, I’m sure.
