Opinion: Mandates may be on way out, but millions will still use masks. Respect their decisions.

A Florida federal judge’s decision on Monday to ban mask-wearing requirements on public transportation was appealed on Wednesday by the Biden administration without a request for an immediate stay. The ruling led many travelers on planes, trains, buses and subways to drop the precaution, some in celebratory fashion. With COVID-19 now causing far fewer hospitalizations and deaths than seen for most of the past two years, such a policy change was probably only weeks away anyway — and the sense of relief it provided to many was easy to understand.

But there are at least 8 million Americans who are immunocompromised and at risk even from the weaker variants of the virus circulating in recent months, so it is essential that there be a broad public acceptance of the millions of Americans who are certain to still wear masks while riding transit, hitting the store or going anywhere in public — even outdoors. Those who live with the immunocompromised and/or care for them should be careful as well.

If I was an “immunocompromised” person, as I was when I was taking chemo therapy before the ChiComFlu, I would take my own precautions to stay healthy. It would never have occurred to me to make a complete stranger dance to my tune and blame them if I got sick. I followed common sense rules: only travel when necessary, try to stay out of closed groups, and if you must take mass transit, wear an appropriate masking system.

It about .10 percent where I am ... 1 in 1000 at most ...

I'm in MASKachusetts. There was 'talk' yesterday that the Mayor (a raging progressive) may bring back the mask mandate for all indoor activities in Boston. For every 5 people here, 4 are wearing masks, and, it doesn't matter the age group, young, old, little kids, it's become a fashion statement.

I flew from Spokane to San Jose the day after the mandate was killed. That was my observation, too — about 3% wore masks in the airport and on the plane.

It was a shocker when I got into the San Jose terminal and about 30% were still wearing the diapers. San Jose / Silicon Valley is the most liberal place in the USA and people are still scared to death.

What’s particularly worrisome here is teenagers and people in their 20s are, by far, the most fearful cohort. That does not bode well as they are obviously unable to think critically.

Very well put, 2B. Excellent summary.

And that about-face was executed in a heartbeat.

Actually I replied to someone else who called anyone wearing a mask “a moron”. Simply pointing out the fact that there may be people who are wearing masks for legitimate reasons. I know lately it is taboo for anyone to have a different opinion than some other posters. Heck we have sunk so low now we have long time posters calling each other nazi or Putinpuffers on a regular basis. There seems no room for honest disagreement anymore with some folks here, it is their way or the highway. This once highly regarded and respectable forum is becoming like DU more and more every day.

Nope, they are uninformed, obviously ideologically-bound sheep. Tying to stop a virus particle with a mask is like putting up a chain-link fence to stop the mosquito invasion of your yard. I do not have to “respect” for self-inflicted ignorance…so don’t ask me to. It is similar asking me to pity Democrats who can’t help it that Biden is a total failure. Waste of digital space.

Actually you were the one who called me a moron

“ I couldn’t care less what you wear on your body parts, but if you weren’t wearing a mask out of respect for your wife’s condition until ‘covid’ was sprung on us, then yeah, you’re a moron, because any number of virulent pathogens have, and always will be, among us...”

Again you had to comment without knowing anything about the specific condition or the unique risks that Covid presents to people with that particular condition. A clear example of someone with a tiny bit of knowledge throwing it around as a blanket condemnation without regard to the specific circumstances. That was my primary point through this tedious discussion.

We will no more respect their decisions than they did ours.

Reciprocity is the fundamental axiom of ethics.

No, I do not need to respect stupid people.

And of course, you KNOW the reason that each and every person wears a mask, correct?

Mold, pollen, dust?

What are you going to do - ask people why they are wearing a mask?

I will point and laugh and scoff at them until they are no more!

Another ignorant comment. You have no idea why someone is wearing a mask.

Man, the quality of FR posts has really declined.

Re: 151 - Dude (or Dudette!), you’re wasting your time.

There are studies that show that masks are effective against ballistic transmission (e.g. large droplets emitted from sneezing, coughing, etc.). I question how effective masks are against non-ballistic transmission.

It’s about reducing risk, not eliminating risk. But some of the intellectual titans love to suggest that because masks are not totally effective, then they are not at all effective.

My suggestion - ignore these giants of intellect.

I don’t care if people wear or not wear masks - everyone should just stay in their lane. It is amazing the number of Karens on this thread.

“And of course, you KNOW the reason that each and every person wears a mask, correct?”

Prior to COVID, I’d see someone walking down the street wearing a mask...once a year? Maybe once a decade? Maybe LESS?!

So yeah, when I see people in a liberal city wearing a mask walking thru an almost empty parking lot...I know. It is like a flashing neon “I’m STUPID!” sign, only on their mouth instead of over their head.
