WASHINGTON — U.S. officials are anxiously watching the French presidential election, aware that the outcome of the vote on Sunday could scramble President Joe Biden’s relations with Europe and reveal dangerous fissures in Western democracy.
President Emmanuel Macron of France has been a crucial partner as Biden has rebuilt relations with Europe, promoted democracy and forged a coalition in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But Macron is in a tight contest with Marine Le Pen, a far-right challenger.
Le Pen is a populist agitator who, in the style of former President Donald Trump, scorns European Union “globalists,” criticizes NATO and views President Vladimir Putin of Russia as an ally.
Her victory could complicate Biden’s effort to isolate Russia and aid Ukraine. But the very real prospect of a nationalist leading France is also a reminder that the recent period of U.S.-European solidarity on political and security issues like Russia and democracy may be deceptively fragile. Poland and Hungary, both NATO members, have taken authoritarian turns. And Germany’s surprisingly strong response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is already drawing domestic criticism.
“To have a right-wing government come to power in France would be a political earthquake,” said Charles A. Kupchan, a professor at Georgetown who was the Europe director of the National Security Council during the Obama administration. “It would send a troubling signal about the overall political health of the Western world.”

Yep. Another WEF stooge.
New World Oder relations. NYT such filthy liars.
They're starting to say the quiet part out loud.
Conservatives can’t win major elections anymore. Vote Fraud on the left and all of that.
Fussures in western democracy?
Bingo. Honestly, I don’t doubt it. Notice their trying to hit Le Pen with the old Russia sling. Russia, Russia... Now where have we seen that? CIA, FBI, probably NSA too. Obama directly meddled in Israel’s election. You don’t think Obama’s puppet regime isn’t in there working it?
The New York Times is in meltdown.
That’s a great sign of hope.
Kinda in the same spirit of Obama telling the UK not to leave the EU.
Macro-le poof likely wins due to SMOTE-B type digital voting algorithms, but I really hope Le Pen somehow pills this off.
Good grief, no bias in this report at all... /s
Putin is no ally!
LOL....looks like the only ones ‘bracing’ are the leftists!!
“It don’t take a weatherman to tell which way the wind blows” Bobby Zimmerman Dylan
Well... maybe the press just don’t wanna get it. It’s all about a control of media, PR, sloganisms, and a banel, maddening rhetoric that might be starting to fall short.
Has Zelensky spoke to the French masses, yet?
I read in a previous post that they use paper ballots, hand counts and very strict ballot security and rules. We should emulate them.
So we’re all supposed to ‘pretend’ that Joe Biden is with it enough to have personal relationships with foreign heads of state? M’kay, NYTimes... Righttttt.
“our democracy” or “Western democracy” are used by leftists to mean globalist autocracy. Here, DEM and GOP are both “our democracy” but MAGA isn’t.
I thought the same thing. The left ‘braces for’ while the right ‘hopes for’.
What a bunch of biased dreck. Only a brainwashed idiot would read Yahoo/NYT.
“I would love to see Le Pen win it, it’s effect on the EU would be equivalent to Brexit. Last chance to save France, I hope they do it.”
I agree.
BTW: I’d rather see nationalism than globalism, as with the latter a handful of big boys call the shots, which doesn’t often inure to the benefit of the little guys. Best that each country decides its own direction, and its own fate.
