WHAT WAS ITS HISTORY?
The warship was launched as the Slava from a shipyard in Mykolaiv in what was then the Soviet republic of Ukraine in July 1979, according to open-source intelligence firm Janes. Commissioned in late December 1982, it was 611.5 feet (186 meters) long. It was designed to carry a crew of 476 with an additional 62 officers.
The Slava served as the flagship of the Soviet fleet in the Black Sea. It carried both surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, deck guns, torpedoes and mortars. It also had a helicopter deck.
During the Cold War, it also carried nuclear weapons. In 1989, under Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, U.S. and Soviet scientists took part in a joint test abroad the Slava in the Black Sea to measure the emission of neutrons and gamma rays from a nuclear warhead on a cruise missile.
In late 1989, the Slava was supposed to host a meeting off Malta between Gorbachev and then-President George H.W. Bush, but gale force winds prompted the Soviet-hosted side of the talks to be held instead on the docked cruiser Maxim Gorky.
FROM SLAVA TO MOSKVA
The Slava underwent repairs from 1990-1999. During that time, the Soviet Union collapsed, an independent Ukraine emerged and Russia’s economy foundered. Finally overhauled and rechristened the Moskva, the ship hosted both President Vladimir Putin and then-Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi during a 2003 visit to Sardinia.
“Thank God, our cruisers can still go on their own, our planes and missiles can fly,” Putin said at the time.
Putin’s later comments at the La Maddalena naval base show how much has changed. He described the Moskva’s presence as a sign that “the level of trust between Russia and the NATO countries is rising.” NATO’s eastward expansion and Russian security were among the reasons Putin cited

Biggest enemy a carrier has is over it or under it. That’s why they sortie with screening ships. But if they kick it the the arse screening vessels are gone. They can’t keep up. It’s why they move in battle groups. Planning and coordination is the key. The Radioman and medic don’t walk point or drag on infantry patrol. It is what it is. Regards.
The same applies to you: It's rather curious how such emotional topics glean leftist traits from alleged Conservatives who troll this forum.
Straw man much? /s
I personally witnessed the Slava Class warship Marshal Ustinov arrive and tie up at Norfolk Naval Station, Norfolk, Virginia while assigned to destroyer U.S.S. Stump as a midshipman on summer cruise.
The thing was long, massive, somewhat graceful but moreso muscular looking travelling through the channel, sort of intimidating, really, but for the fact that it was visiting during a rare thaw in the cold war.
Here’s the blurb (the operative part being “July 21-25, 1989 visit to Norfolk (USA)”):
Project 1164 Atlant - Marshal Ustinov [ex-
Lobov]
The second unit, the Marshal Ustinov, on September 17, 1977 was included in the lists of the Navy, October 5, 1979 laid at the factory to them. 61 Kommunara in Nikolaev (building number 2009), was launched on February 25, 1982, the crew began to settle in May 1985, factory and state tests were carried out from April 11 to August 12, 1986, an acceptance certificate was signed on September 15, 1986, September 21 The flag was hoisted in 1986 and on November 5, 1986 the cruiser became part of the Northern Fleet (120 brigade of missile ships of 43 divisions) - initially with hull number “070”, later number “088” and finally number “055”.
The first commander was cap.2 rank V.D. Veregin. From December 7, 1987 to June 23, 1988, military service in the Mediterranean Sea with the call to Tartus (Syria), 16,780 miles were traveled. April 6, 1989 visit to the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy and the Minister of Defense of France. July 21-25, 1989 visit to Norfolk (USA), together with the destroyer “Excellent” and the tanker “G. Gas-nov” under the flag of v-adm. I.V. Kasatonova (cap. Cap. 2 ranks G.I. Frunza),
Please add me to the Ukraine ping list. Thanks.
[Russia has just proven that bad planning and organization can kill the invader.]
The trick to not getting bagged by shore defenses is not to get within range. Getting roped into resupply mission convoys is kind of risky for a flagship. You’d think they’d have low value coast guard corvettes and missile boats for that. The Black Sea is said to be pretty calm.
Leftist traits?
Perhaps you don’t read? The Russian ministry admitted the ship sank.
Perhaps you have no comprehension:
STRAW MAN.
Who has examined the Vindman family finances wrt Ukraine corruption?
It is absolutely certain the flagship of the Black Sea fleet, cruiser Moskva sent distress signals, Russian ships swarmed over the area and the crew abandoned ship. Russian navy said so, they wouldn’t have lied their capital ship was sunk if it was perfectly fine. Russian story is there was a fire onboard, which spread to magazines and the ship blew up.
While their story is not impossible, a fire like that on a surface vessel requires suicidal levels of ineptitude. Say what you will of the Russian navy, if this happened on a flagship of the fleet, you’d expect their other ships would be blowing up on a monthly basis.
So Ukrainian version of events, where they struck the cruiser with two missiles, is the more plauisble of the two. Exact details may not be correct. For example, it is possible the ship intercepted one or even both missiles with CIWS, but the sharpnel and mass of the missile still hit the ship and detonated some of the ordnance on deck. This is currently unverifiable and may remain such for some time, until the wreck is located or we get images of the stricken ship still afloat perhaps.
But overall, it does seem like a Ukrainian attack sunk the flagship of the Black Sea fleet
Strawman is your post #10 “If the ship was struck by missiles”
Perhaps you believe that the Flag ship of the Russian Black sea fleet Moskva has taken out two Ukrainian Neptune missiles with it’s hull. After a stunning maneuver the Moskva skillfully placed itself into the path of the incoming Ukrainian missiles. The two missiles were utterly destroyed and can no longer be used by the Ukrainians.
The Moskva is on a “special underwater operation” looking for Ukrainian crabs and jellyfish after transferring to the submarine flotilla. They will sort them out those pesky Ukrainian crabs.
.
The Lincoln Project is paying Vindman, his wife, and his wife’s sister - admittedly.
Remember the Spy they used to try to get Trump?
Stephen Halper. Turns out the Gov was paying him millions to write a paper or something. Vindman is mostly likely in that black budget.
Beamy son of a bitch too, and tall. Forgot to mention that aspect. At one point I saw it head-on, pointing straight at me. Beamy, as in, impressively broad amidships across the ship from port to starboard. Viewed from that persepective (head-on) the many “O” decks piled up steeply, and pyramid-like, to form the superstructure, the bridge and the radar/comms mast.
Exactly. Amazingly - but not surprisingly - Russia continues to lose military assets. This time a naval ship of some real importance.
The myth of the powerful Russian military is forever tainted. Sure, they have nuclear weapons. But outside those they have been shown to be a third-rate power.
Early in WWII the USN used our submarines for messenger and other mundane chores. Then the desk idiots were replaced by war fighters. Unrestricted submarine warfare became policy. We finally got torpedo technology that worked and the Japanese paid a big price. We also paid a price. Our lost boats dot the map in the seas around Japan.
Day 50 of Putin’s 3 day war (A news alert from Russian newspaper Pravda, citing a report from the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) read: “Putin expected to seize Ukraine in three days. This is the supply of provisions he distributed to his soldiers.”)
Putin brilliantly playing 5d chess with ping pong balla has declared his flag ship caught fire (after being hit by Ukrainian missiles) and become a crab Fisher...
“...in that black budget...”
I’m sure that is a bottomless pit.
Just interrogate John Brennan.
Attributing "suicidal levels of ineptitude" to naval personnel - which also applies to USN - is rather desperate (to state nothing of inflammatory toward USN personnel). Clayton Hartwig's family - to cite merely one incident - continues to try to clear his name to this day...from a narrative that THE US GOVERNMENT INVENTED. And it wasn't in a war theater.
Furthermore, "cruiser Moskva sent distress signals," and those transmissions were intercepted. It is equally plausible that the Ukranians saw an opportunity, but I'm not the one desperate to fit one version of the 'truth' to a narrative egregiously lacking facts.
Use lots of lotion.
Haven’t seen satellite imagery of ships fleeing south.
***I saw one yesterday. They said that if it were on fire there woulda been a bunch of rescue ships nearby but instead they were all leaving the area.
The Russians said: “Not sunk. Promoted to submarine.”
