[Russia has just proven that bad planning and organization can kill the invader.]

It may simply have been carrying out a role into which it was shoehorned.

The trick to not getting bagged by shore defenses is not to get within range. Getting roped into resupply mission convoys is kind of risky for a flagship. You’d think they’d have low value coast guard corvettes and missile boats for that. The Black Sea is said to be pretty calm.

Early in WWII the USN used our submarines for messenger and other mundane chores. Then the desk idiots were replaced by war fighters. Unrestricted submarine warfare became policy. We finally got torpedo technology that worked and the Japanese paid a big price. We also paid a price. Our lost boats dot the map in the seas around Japan.
