The Moskva, sunk off Ukraine, served in wars hot and cold

WHAT WAS ITS HISTORY?

The warship was launched as the Slava from a shipyard in Mykolaiv in what was then the Soviet republic of Ukraine in July 1979, according to open-source intelligence firm Janes. Commissioned in late December 1982, it was 611.5 feet (186 meters) long. It was designed to carry a crew of 476 with an additional 62 officers.

The Slava served as the flagship of the Soviet fleet in the Black Sea. It carried both surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, deck guns, torpedoes and mortars. It also had a helicopter deck.

During the Cold War, it also carried nuclear weapons. In 1989, under Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, U.S. and Soviet scientists took part in a joint test abroad the Slava in the Black Sea to measure the emission of neutrons and gamma rays from a nuclear warhead on a cruise missile.

In late 1989, the Slava was supposed to host a meeting off Malta between Gorbachev and then-President George H.W. Bush, but gale force winds prompted the Soviet-hosted side of the talks to be held instead on the docked cruiser Maxim Gorky.

FROM SLAVA TO MOSKVA

The Slava underwent repairs from 1990-1999. During that time, the Soviet Union collapsed, an independent Ukraine emerged and Russia’s economy foundered. Finally overhauled and rechristened the Moskva, the ship hosted both President Vladimir Putin and then-Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi during a 2003 visit to Sardinia.

“Thank God, our cruisers can still go on their own, our planes and missiles can fly,” Putin said at the time.

Putin’s later comments at the La Maddalena naval base show how much has changed. He described the Moskva’s presence as a sign that “the level of trust between Russia and the NATO countries is rising.” NATO’s eastward expansion and Russian security were among the reasons Putin cited

This is fake news.

One other item I've seen recently said that the ship was safe at Savastopol. The Moskva is primarily built to kill US carriers. It shouldn't even be in the black sea, it doesn't carry any weapons for attacking land targets.

Haven’t seen satellite imagery of ships fleeing south.

I suspect the Russians do not know what happened. There were survivors so eventually they will know. Don’t know if warships have black boxes like airliners, but there was plenty of time to extract them. They knew the risks of towing in heavy weather so if those boxes exist, they would have gotten them.

BTW the Exocet that hit HMS Sheffield never exploded. Unused propellant started a fire and it took time to put it out. A few days later, sank, while being towed. The Falklands seas are always rough. And then there is HMS Glamorgan. Hit with an Exocet. Survived. Repaired. Sold to the Chilean Navy. Served 12 years. And then sank. While being towed.

Who cares how it sank? Good riddance. It won’t be bombing Ukrainian cities anymore. RIH.

P.S. The Snake Island soldier Roman Hrybov must be smiling today.

Why are so many finding it hard to believe that a Russian ship was sunk by the Ukrainians while operating in a war zone. It happens even to the best of naval powers.

While the Nazis weren’t the best of naval powers, a brand-new ship, the Blücher was sunk by the Norwegians using pre-WWI torpedos on the first day of the German ‘special operation’ in Norway.

No they haven’t. Both tanks and capital ships have their purpose and place in the modern battlefield.

But they aren’t placed by themselves.

Look at American aircraft carrier groups. These not only have an aircraft carrier but destroyers, frigates, aircraft and submarines. It can take on anything.

Russia has just proven that bad planning and organization can kill the invader.

To my knowledge, she’s the first capital surface combatant sank in battle since the Falklands War.

Perhaps you also doubt the Russian ministry that announced the moskva had sunk?

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-61114843

A Russian warship that was damaged by an explosion on Wednesday has sunk, Russia’s defence ministry has said.

Moskva, the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, was being towed to port when “stormy seas” caused it to sink, according to a ministry message.

The 510-crew missile cruiser was a symbol of Russia’s military power, leading its naval assault on Ukraine.
Kyiv says its missiles hit the warship. Moscow has not reported any attack. It says the vessel sank after a fire.

Why are so many finding it hard to believe that a Russian ship was sunk by the Ukrainians while operating in a war zone.

Perhaps because so many lies come from the Ukranians.

Including the missile strike on the Kramatorsk train station, falsely attributed to the Russians.

Including the alleged missile attack on the landing ship at Berdyansk.

The list is LONG...and those parroting news reports without validation should remember IT'S A WAR ZONE and that PROPAGANDA IS PART & PARCEL of war operations.

It's rather curious how such emotional topics glean leftist traits from alleged Conservatives who troll this forum.

Heavy cloud cover because of the storm in which the Russians have acknowledged the Moskva sunk.

And that's HILARIOUS.
