To be fair, look at Russian history. They get invaded by a lot of people that were ostensibly “friendly” or that were a defensive pact.
I was in Seattle in 1990. After the Berlin Wall, but before Yeltsin. But the writing was on the wall for the USSR. A Russian navy ship was docked north of the Public Market. For some reason, the crew could not disembark. But a huge crowd of American had gathered and the sailors and Americans were trading by tossing stuff back and forth. Candy bars, winter jackets, toilet paper would get thrown up over the rail of the ship and sailors would throw Russian stuff back. I bought a new pair of Nikes, threw it up and got a fur lined military cap that I still have. There was a huge amount of good will back then. All squandered now.
In what port city did this interesting exchange take place?
Seattle
Strange question
Thanks, I flunked reading on that one. I’ve heard some similar stories. It seemed during the Yeltsin time tenure that Russia would be a cat’s PJs friend to the US. Even the early Putin went to Solzhenitsyn’s funeral, but I don’t think he would attend such an event today.
She sleeps with the fishes.
Yes, considering that there’s more than a couple private (non-government) photosats sitting over the area right now.
After Sean Connery left they sank ...
I hate to see the people being killed on both sides. It seems such a stupid war.
I see unthinking people cheering when a Russian tank explodes, killing everyone inside. Yes, a price is being paid... I hope all of them know Jesus.
On the other hand, there is a global conspiracy to make us all slaves with digital currency, completely tracked and controlled.
And those people seem to be on the side of Ukraine, at least on the surface.
Yep. Now, new lessons to learn...
Boy, are you naive.
“Them cross eyed Japs could never...” etc.
I disagree. There is no more hiding in the big wide ocean in 2022. The Pacific is just as finite as Lake Erie to modern sensors.
The next big war will be fought by robots. Miniaturized.
Luck plays a big part. A hit in a magazine or a hit in crew berthing.
More than half of the American-made 500LB bombs the Argies planted deep into British warships in the Falklands war failed to detonate.
If they had, and had ten or so British warships been sunk or put out of action, history might have been a bit different.
There is still so much to learn. Plus, who fired the “Neptune missiles?” Really?
It’s a proxy war, after all.
I suppose we’ll see what really happened. I’m a little skeptical for the moment still just because in my lifetime Russian Naval losses were most often self-inflicted.
I’m still not sold that the Ukes sunk the ship at Berdyansk, either. A dockside munitions event feels more likely to me.
I just read there was a rescue mission ongoing.
That makes it sound more real...
It looks like a destroyer, not a cruiser…
