María Jesús was grilling tortillas. Patricia was frying pork ribs. Adriana was sipping a cup of tea to calm her nerves. For the Martínez sisters, that Friday was shaping up like most Fridays in their mountain village, the women preparing lunch in their simple homes as their husbands tended the fields.
Then the women’s father, Javier, sent an urgent warning: The Jalisco cartel had arrived.
“Our lives changed in a minute,” said María Jesús, 31. Gunmen in four armor-plated “monster” trucks had been spotted just across the valley, Javier told his children. They grabbed their kids and ran.
Three months later, 17 family members are crammed into an abandoned restaurant here in Coahuayana, a banana-growing town on the Pacific coast, home to an estimated 1,000 Mexicans uprooted from their communities.
As criminal groups battle for control over Mexican territory, the displaced are becoming increasingly visible, in towns such as Coahuayana and at the U.S. border. An estimated 20,000 people have fled violence in the past year in Michoacán state, roughly the size of West Virginia. Thousands more have abandoned their homes in other states like Zacatecas and Guerrero.

I'll never go back.
Thanks for posting this.
This is the sob story that makes all mexicans political refugees when they illegally cross the border.
Should be given a water bottle, a rifle with ammunition, and a copy of the US Constitution, and sent right back with the instructions, “Fix it!”
They always offer personal made up sob stories that can’t be confirmed. “The cartels are here, so let’s go to America and get some loot.”
👍
But we're told by our Democrat leaders that illegal aliens are wonderful for our country and are necessary to help make our nation productive and prosper. Too bad they won't stay in Mexico and make it a better place. They'll ruin us as well.
What did everyone expect? Its a failed narco state.
The Bezos Compost is nearly satirical. Do people really believe in articles that begin with a sob story? I guess so. Government schools have taught people to emote instead of critically think.
I’ve been to Mexico dozens of times for my employers over the years. Have zero desire to go back. Would not go there on vacation if everything was free.
What is it about people wanting to travel to third world countries to take advantage of the poor people that are employed to treat the travelers like royalty, when in reality they are likely spitting in your food.
Classic example is the “destination wedding” nonsense.
Just another impoverished country where folks think they are getting a bargain.
Good ideas are always good ideas.
Of the 195 countries in the world (1 being the worst):
#1 El Salvador
#3 Jamaica
#5 Venezuela
#6 Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
#7 Honduras
#8 Saint Kitts and Nevis
#11 Trinidad and Tobago
#12 Mexico
The next 9 (#13 - 21) countries, ranked by murder per 100,000 people per year are ALL Latin/South American.
Iraq is #39

Yes, most of the people that are illegal are no trouble, but about 1 in 4 adult men is a felon in their home country. As so often is the case, if someone has no facts or figures on their side, they resort to emotions / feelings and that is what all these amnesty and open border folks do. Show you images of children, some elderly lady... It's all about invoking sympathy and feelings.
What we are doing is stupid. It's dangerous. That said, those people that are crossing the border legally, often daily, should not be hassled or troubled. The goal should be to target those that are breaking the law and posing a security risk, not lawful US and/or Mexican citizens. Crossing that boarder should not be a painful many hour long ordeal for those that are doing nothing wrong.
On the Republican side, we need to come to grips with many people that were raised here, speak English (some can't even speak Spanish), their friends are here, their family is here... yet are technically "illegal." In part their status was often the result of changing policies and/or delays by our State Department. While it is a hard pill to swollow, and it sets a presedent we don't want (Reagan did that and look where we are at today), there is no ethical/moral solution for this other than figuring out a pathway to citizenship.
This is a more complex issue where you cannot answer it with a simple clear solution that makes everyone happy. The US S. border is a mess. Something needs done. For sure we need to control what is coming across that border.
Yup. When I trot that one out it always horrifies my leftist pals...especially when I reference Abbey...
Another sob story propaganda piece about why we should take them in and pay all their living expenses, and mami and papi too.
