Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appears to be cementing his stance as a prominent Republican leader ahead of 2024 as other red states mimic the Sunshine State's policies.
DeSantis has been leading the charge on several GOP priorities, including the coronavirus pandemic, critical race theory and LGBTQ issues.
"He's obviously the most high-profile Republican governor in the country," Brad Coker, the director at Mason-Dixon Polling and Strategy in Florida, told Newsweek. "No one else has his level of national coverage, and he's the center of attention in Florida."
The Florida leader was one of the first in the nation to begin reopening their economies, prompting other Republican officials to follow suit. Not only did DeSantis reopen his state earlier than other areas, but he also pushed back hard on mask mandates and vaccine passports. Last year, DeSantis ordered mask requirements in schools be banned—an action taken by Texas officials not long after.

To think that another professional politician is the answer is absurd. People seem to have learned nothing from 2016. Do you really think DeSantis would be some sort of conservative savior if he became President? First of all, he doesn’t have the financial independence to run his own campaign. What does that mean? Figure it out. Remember when conservative darling Ted Cruz ran in 2016, and suddenly we saw a different Ted Cruz than the principled conservative orator we had seen up to that point? When the rubber met the road, we saw a different side of Cruz that we hadn’t seen before. We saw a Ted Cruz that was heavily reliant upon consultants. We saw a Ted Cruz who was beholden to big money donors.
Does anybody really think the same thing won’t happen with DeSantis? Just because you don’t see the strings doesn’t mean the strings aren’t there. DeSantis didn’t do much in Congress until Trump became President. Before then he was another do-nothing member of the conservative caucus who never publicly stood up to RINO Speakers Boehner and Ryan. It was only when Trump came along and changed the entire political landscape that DeSantis suddenly found his courage.
It’s not that hard to govern as a conservative on the state level, at least in Red states like Florida. The GOP Establishment gives leeway to candidates they’re grooming for higher office. They do so, to allow them to establish their conservative cred with the conservative base. The prize is placing people they can control in the Presidency and in Congress. State governance is mostly a side show for them, and if they have to back off and let someone govern as a conservative at the state level in order to help them build up their popularity - small price to pay.
Look at Kemp in Georgia, as an example. He’s done some positive things on some key conservative issues in the past year. But he showed his true colors when he sat back and allowed the election to be stolen in Georgia, and perhaps even helped enable the theft. It’s all politics for him. He’s only governing this way so he can be re-elected.
If DeSantis because President I have no doubt he would govern like a RINO, throwing the base a victory here and there, but mostly compromising on important issues.
Besides that - even if DeSantis was his own man who was somehow able to govern with the independence of a Trump, he still would be a disappointment. It’s not just believing all the right things and even fighting for them. It’s about being able to win. Trump is the alpha-male’s alpha-male. He was born for the game, has spent a lifetime thriving and succeeding at making deals, and making things happen. And he’s good at it. He understands power and how to wield it effectively. A politician like DeSantis, even if he has the best of intentions, simply doesn’t possess that skill, or at least not anywhere near the level of a Trump.
DeSantis would never be able to survive the withering level of attacks Trump has endured since 2015. Few could.
You need to give up day drinking.
If Trump is the nominee in 2024, certainly we’ll support him, but I’d like to see DeSantis carrying the flag against the dems.
Trump’s running and DeSantis has said on multiple occasions he’s not interested in challenging him.
DeSantis has shown good judgement in staff picks and endorsements.....far better than Trump!

If he’d choose Noem for VP, that could be good. She’s had a hiccup or two along the way, but does well on the issue of liberty. During the Covid thing her state was pretty much open and thriving.
You are right and that is one of the many reasons why I am for DeSantis for President in 2024.

There is a price to pay for Trump’s scorched earth primary campaign tactics. The supporters of the Targets of his attacks will not easily forget his behavior. He will be hard pressed to convince the 59% or Republicans that do not support him to come on board after he spewed Democrat talking points against his fellow Republicans all through the primary.
