Michelle Irwin, the principal of San Diego’s largest high school, has decided to cut many of the school’s honors classes. In an email sent to parents, Irwin explained she was doing this for equity.
Irwin cut the courses for equity reasons, according to an email she wrote to parents. She told parents she wanted to move away from “stratifying” classes and remove the stigma from non-honors courses. She has also cited racial disparities in honors course enrollment — a problem that is mirrored nationwide…
Latino students made up 54 percent of California’s public school students in 2017 but they represented only 43 percent of students who were enrolled in at least one AP course, according to the U.S. Civil Rights Data Collection. Black students made up 6 percent of the state’s enrollment but just 4 percent of students who were enrolled in at least one AP course.
A similar trend is happening at Patrick Henry, according to limited data presented by Irwin at a school council meeting earlier this year. White and Vietnamese students made up a disproportionately higher percentage of enrollment in Honors American Literature and Honors U.S. History, while Latino students were disproportionately lower, according to Irwin’s data.
The underrepresentation is a problem because enrollment in advanced courses is associated with a host of academic benefits, such as better attendance, fewer suspensions and higher graduation rates. Participation and success in honors and AP courses are also key factors considered in college admissions.

I am appalled by this. The principal is using her position to forward her personal politics, by taking away opportunities from students.
For a student to be competitive for admission at one of the two local state colleges, San Diego State or University of California at San Diego, the student needs a least a 4.0 GPA. To get a high GPA, students take classes that score 5 on a 4 point scale, the honors or Advanced Placement classes. This principal isn't yet removing the AP classes, but she is removing most of the honors classes.
I love to watch the left do stupid things which basically shout that minority students aren’t very smart.
Massive ARTH ping!
Dumbing down the schools for “equity.” No child left ahead.
That’s the ticket. Just dumb down all the courses and all the students. Homeschool your kids today and put a lazy ass government teacher out of work tomorrow.
And where do they want their doctors? From the bottom half of the class?
Right? They’re basically screaming from the rooftops that people of color are too stupid to compete in an open arena. And what do the people of color do as a response? Clap like seals… they don’t even realize they’re being insulted
this straight up BS from this principle, this is my HS i graduated from in 1973. this is shameful
Everyone will lose, but at least they will lose equally, and I guess that’s what matters to the left. “Harrison Bergeron” was supposed to be a warning, not a how-to guide.
San Diego High School Principal Michelle Irwin and the associated school board should be indicted, tried, and convicted of racist abuse of children. It’s too bad the sentences for this convicted leftist rabble could not include being publicly flogged.
Equity: “We can’t improve black performance, so instead we are going to cripple white people”.
Close to 30 years ago, we specifically moved to a neighborhood because the school district had a great honors program. The year after we moved there, they cancelled the honors program. They were getting too many lawsuits over not enough black students in the honors programs.
In the name of equity, the basketball hoops should be lowered by 5 feet.
All three of the high school’s honor students are probably upset.
Patrick Henry High School is the only high school in the San Diego Unified District where a parent would want to send their kid. A lot of those parents will send their kids to private school if they can.
Lets make everyone equally stupid!
Kurt was a prophet.
the kind of high school that one would expect to find in the world of harrison bergeron
