The Obama portraits are finally here, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH) is planning a full afternoon of fun activities on Sunday, April 3, to celebrate their arrival.
In 2018, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., debuted “The Obama Portraits,” an exhibit with works by Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald portraying former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. The portraits have since gone on tour in Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles and Atlanta. And now, it’s Houston’s turn.
The afternoon will begin with remarks from U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas and Necole Irvin of the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs.
Attendees will also get to join in on a discussion with the Free Black Women’s Library about “White Teeth,” a Zadie Smith novel recommended by Michelle Obama, and meet the folks behind Kindred Stories, a new bookstore that highlights Black authors and artists.
After Houston, the Obama portraits will head to San Francisco, then Boston.

Ew.
I never understood the symbolism. Obama is sitting in a chair in the midst of a field of leaves.
And Michelle’s portrait doesn’t really look like her. She’s also seated, not standing, not sure if that is supposed to signify anything.
I’m sure to some these portraits bring out delightful feelings. I just don’t get it.
Hard Pass
Michael’s portrait is extremely flattering to the homely oaf.
Ah, I just noticed the date: April Fools
Now I get it.
I have to wash my hair. Not driving into that cesspool anyway.
Ah yes, the Houston Comical, Houston Barnacle, whatever.
My husband still insists on subscribing to this rag, and every morning when I go out to bring the paper in, I laugh at the biased headline of the day. That’s as far as I can get.
As hubby sits and reads the paper, he’ll say “did you know blah blah blah”? And I’ll say, “Yes dear I learned about that 2 days ago on Free Republic. And let me tell you what REALLY happened”.
Empty chair.
In any impressionist rendition, Moochie belongs in an NFL football uniform.
Mmm mmm mmm ...
A friend of mine was incredulous that I don't watch one of the 6:30 evening news programs. I told him that by 6:30 PM, I already know the day's top stories (and many more) with a better chance of knowing the truth.
So true.
I’m hoping the people who rely solely on newspapers and the mainstream “news” to feed them information are becoming fewer.
We have the resources to research and form our own opinions - and we need to do so.
The Kenyan from Indonesia is NOT a natural born citizen and was never eligible to be President.
Hope the loss of the Constitution was worth it for everyone.
“... a full afternoon of fun activities...”
until the shooting starts...
Now that’s a real dream come true . . .
I thin that’s a planned part of the fun activities.
