Germany mulls nationalization of Gazprom, Rosneft units - Handelsblatt

The German economy ministry is considering expropriation of Gazprom and Rosneft units in the country amid concerns about security of energy supply, business daily Handelsblatt reported on Thursday, citing government sources.

The discussions between top ministry officials and Chancellor Olaf Scholz aim to prevent massive power cuts if either of these companies, which are systemically important for Germany, gets into difficulties, the newspaper reported.

Both companies are irreplaceable on the German energy market with Gazprom Germania operating large gas storage facilities and Rosneft Deutschland being a key player in the petrol, diesel and kerosene refinery markets, Handelsblatt reported.

It doesn’t, or shouldn’t.
That nat gas dependency should be ended as soon as possible.
It was really stupid to sign on to a utility service from Russia.

It will, worst case, make things somewhat difficult for Germany for a season. But going forward Russia will find it very hard to get anyone to sign on for natgas service or any sort of foreign commitment.

Even China will be leery of any kind of dependency of this sort on Russia.

Dream on. It’s 2022, not 1982.

There is no difference. Russian behavior makes it fundamentally unreliable for such dependent relationships. Its like signing up with an electric utility run by the Rajneesh cult.

I remain convinced that the post-cold-war Russkies installed a loyal DDR operative as the ultimate sleeper puppet. Codename: Angela.

Great. Then Germany will have no trouble replacing Russian gas, oil, coal, nickel, fertilizer etc.

No problemo at all.

Can’t wait to see this miracle.

How’s the firewood situation in Germany?
If they need to burn it next winter, better get it cut, split, and start aging asap.

The big difference is that Biden has not started any bloody and unnecessary wars.

Sure he has. Afghanistan and the Ukraine. Neither would have gone the way they have without him.

“It was really stupid to sign on to a utility service from Russia.”

Nothing wrong with signing a contract with a nation who wants to conduct business. But when you do, it’s stupid to move against them in a systematic and offensive way.
There would be no problem at all had Germany and NATO not engaged in a decade of chest bumping, NATO expansion, and then financial and energy sanctions against Russia. Swift, Nordstream 2, confiscating their gold and currency reserves. Denying Russian citizens scheduled cancer treatment.

Now Germany is paying the price for that, not for innocently doing business where both sides mutually benefit.

Biden certainly bears a great deal of responsibility for both of those messes. But it pales in comparison to W’s deliberate and quite unnecessary invasion of Iraq. Biden is a fool. But W is more than just that. He is a war criminal.

Just my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

Oil, coal, fertilizer are commodities. One can ship these things from anywhere in the world. There are many producers and many customers. What Germany doesn’t buy, someone else will, and that frees up supplies from other sources. No problem for either side.

But Gas is not really a commodity. It requires long term relationships between partners that trust each other. Russia under Putin started acting “whimsical” in its relationships abroad well over a decade ago. And its gotten much worse.

Pretty that Zerman chancellor Oaf Doltz will be able to pull all this magical energy out his @ss.

Look at the Qatar deal.

Oh, wait - there IS no "Qatar deal". And no Zerman LNG terminals to receive Qatari LNG.

We'll get Harry Potter on this right away!!  winking face face with tears of joy face with tears of joy
