Russia reveals it has had 'almost 10,000 soldiers killed with another 16,000 injured' as satellite photos show Putin's forces digging in around Kyiv and 'planting mines' in sign that their advance has stalled

Russia has lost almost 10,000 soldiers in less than four weeks in Ukraine, according to its own figures.

The death toll – an incredible tally for a war that the Kremlin believed would be over within days – was published by a pro-government website, but quickly taken down.

There was speculation that it was uploaded by a pro-Ukrainian employee. Russia had previously admitted to 498 deaths – but that was on March 2.

The news came as satellite photos showed further evidence that Putin's forces were going on the defensive and digging in ahead of a 'long war'.

Last night's figures said 9,861 soldiers had died in Ukraine, with 16,153 injured. About 15,000 Soviet troops died in Afghanistan after the 1979 invasion – but that was over ten years.

-snip-

The death toll was part of an update from Moscow's defence ministry – and, while they were quickly removed from the website of Komsomolskaya Pravda, a pro-government tabloid, they remained on the archive last night.

Their official lie of 498 deaths was always ridiculous because they have admitted themselves that 6 of their generals have been killed.

The official numbers made a pretty wicked general:troop death ratio.

The website was hacked. Of course the figures remain on archived websites because they’re archived and unable to be edited.

There’s no way Russia would release such catastrophic numbers to their own press. Do better, Daily Mail.

The assumption here is that the Russian newspaper published these figures either inadvertently or through some insider trying to get the word out. That itself is news.

“The news came as satellite photos showed further evidence that Putin’s forces were going on the defensive and digging in ahead of a ‘long war’. “

The siege of Kiev has not yet begun.

It will shock the world.

I tied to explain this two months ago to a Jewish friend who posted the Ukrainian flag on their profile. They were upset with me. At some point you just have to let people learn on their own. Historical patterns do repeat themselves, mostly due to the refusal to acknowledge facts contrary to their perceived reality.

“The siege of Kiev has not yet begun. It will shock the world.”

Mariupol is rubble. Kiev is the last stand. If Zelenskyy holds firm, they will be rebuilding it from ashes after the war too.

If you are infantry and are stationary for more the 24 hours, you always dig in and put out obstacles to include mines.

or through some insider trying to get the word out.

Of course. Everyone in Russia from the lowest/poorest to the richest are getting nothing but PAIN and SUFFERING and LOSS from the demented mad dog's ill thought out adventure. The most logical thing to assume is that many of them want to stop the madness, stop setting Russia back 30 years.

The media keeps saying this but where's the proof Russia said this?

Ivan isn’t doctrinally stupid. Arguably, Ivan is (institutionally) the current grand master at urban warfare. As the author David Drake points out, there is nothing worse than city fighting in someone else’s city.

Rule one of urban warfare: If you can avoid having to conduct urban warfare, do so. Laying siege and starving the occupants out where practical (especially if you let civilians leave) is usually a better idea and gets less people killed on both sides. They will likely surrender and if they don’t there will be fewer people you have to root out and kill.

The "stationary" part is what infantry tries to avoid, unless they have run onto serious opposition and the offensive has stalled.

Modern maneuver warfare - which is what Russia's force is supposed to be tailored for - should be able to maneuver around opposition and attack from the flanks.

That they aren't, shows that they have hit something that is stopping them and they can't get around it.

Whatever. All it takes is a few to make such gestures, and we have seen a bunch already.

Russians have a different doctrine. Theirs is to massacre civilians to create terror.

You’re guilty of what kids nowadays call “American Cultural Imperialism” assuming that American values are universal.
