Many electric car owners have been reveling in their purchases as gas prices reach record highs.

-My text- They used the price of gas in California ($5.57 per gallon) for one car, figuring annual cost of fuel, versus costs of recharging at a charging station.

I’ve seen invoices where a replacement battery pack for a Tesla 3 was $16,000 (labor included).

I’m guessing they Don’t do well in very cold or very hot places for too long.

My ins. is high enough. Add in the extra 23% cost, I’ll stick with the gas power.

I also bet the cost of electricity will go up, or they will add a special tax to it. I just hope they only add the tax to the EV owners. But I’m sure we all will have to pay the price. The roads still need to be repaired.

Worth repeating.

... yet, oddly, people filling up their cars at gas stations don’t fill up to only 80% - they fill up to 100%. I wonder why that might be.

As a very conservative Tesla driver, the cost of charging at home is a fraction of the cost and time than even when gas prices were $2.00. I have the performance of a very expensive sports car at the price of a well equipped Acura. It is expensive to charge at the super charger but how often do you drive over 300 miles in a day? I plug it in every night and it charges at about 44 miles per hours of charge while I sleep. It takes less than 5 seconds to plug and unplug. Also I currently pay zero in state and federal gas tax.

Road trips are where the convenience breaks down. We still have a gas SUV for that.

I have yet to see this simple number for electric cars:

miles per kilowatt hour.

Charge it overnight. Costs $2. Use it to commute and avoid chafing on the road (although many places allow you to charge for free). Sell the vehicle before the battery needs replacing. Teslas are one of the best and most fun cars to drive on the planet.

There is a waiting list to get one— so all the assholes suggestion g “just buy electric” are full of it.

Answering my own question, there’s the mpge, miles per gallon electric equivalent. They take one gallon of gasoline as 33.7 kilowatt hours. Typical numbers seem to be 120 to 140 mpge.

Around here, a winter kwh is about eight cents. Summer, about 12.

So gasoline gallons are currently around the same price as electric equivalent gallons if they aren’t lying.

But before recent gas prices, gasoline was cheaper per watt hour, but gas cars don’t give 120-140 mpg.

So as long as you can charge a car on 8-12 cent electricity, your fuel cost is lower for an electric.

Higher usage will even it all out. It will be too bad if electric cars drive up electric rates in general.

I’m never going to be interested for several reasons. In fact I’m starting to want a car that can burn waste cooking oil among other things.

If you get home empty you’re kinda screwed.

If I get home empty I’ve got ten gallons compactly stored and ready to use.

You’re screwed if you have to get 200 miles away quickly.

No, electric cars are and will remain subsidized until they go away.

Maybe the EV batteries work like my tablet battery: your battery lasts less time every time you recharge. My tablet is maybe 3 years old. I’ve been using it for 2 hours, and battery is 79% charged. Last week it was usually around 57% charged when I went to sleep & recharged. Yesterday, using less online time, it was 17% charged.

“Eventually the gas car would take some of your time to fill up at the gas station.”

The horror.

Are you including oil changes, spark plugs, engine coolant, radiator hoses, fan belts, and tune-ups? Oh, that’s right, EV’s don’t require them. Even the brakes can last hundreds of thousands of miles.
