Buildings at Europe's biggest nuclear power plant are ON FIRE after being attacked by Russian tanks fire sparking fears of radiation disaster: Livestreamed footage shows explosions as heavy weapons target the facility in southern Ukraine

A fire has been seen at a nuclear power plant in Ukraine after tanks opened fire with heavy weapons at the facility, footage in the early hours of Friday morning showed.

A live feed from the Zaporizhzhia station showed flames at the site in the east of country, having earlier showed tanks firing at buildings - sparking fears of a radiation disaster in the nation currently being invaded by Russian forces.

Dmytro Orlov, the mayor of the nearby town of Energodar, confirmed the blaze in an online post. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is the largest of its kind in Europe.

'As a result of continuous enemy shelling of buildings and units of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is on fire,' Orlov said on his Telegram channel, citing what he called a threat to world security.

Earlier, Ukrainian authorities reported Russian troops were stepping up efforts to seize the plant and had entered the town with tanks.

The shocking footage came after Ukrainian civilians defied Russian troops for a second day running in a bid to protect the nuclear plant. They were shown setting up make-shift road blocks in an attempt to block the road to the facility.

Both the Ukrainian state atomic energy company and Orlov said troops were nearing Zaporizhzhia. Officials said loud shots were heard in the city late Thursday.

'Many young men in athletic clothes and armed with Kalashnikov have come into the city. They are breaking down door and trying to get into the apartments of local residents,' the statement from Energoatom said.

The fruits and nuts in the bowl are already rallying to KGB Vlad. How unsurprising.

The Ukrainian information operations have been remarkably effective. Only those who are there watching know what is really happening.

"So now the jackasses here think Russian conscription troops rampaging through Ukraine, because Putin is pissed and said to start destroying more infrastructure - are like little Einsteins who of course won’t do anything stupid."

Here's a thought exercise to help you think. If Louisiana had broken away from the US 30 years ago, controlled the mouth of the Mississippi River and all shipping traffic, and was currently being recruited into an economic and defense alliance with the Soviet union would America invade and be willing to break everything in Texas to get it Louisiana?

I would really love to hear your thoughts.

Chernobyl was on the main invasion route to Kyiv from Belarus. It’s a Kyiv suburb You can see it on the map. Naturally, the Ukrainians never guessed anybody would be insane enough to attack a city of 4 million through that nuke waste dump. Putinist Russia hits bottom and keeps digging. Sad.

If you follow Twitter the fighting around Energodar where the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is has been going on for hours or at this point a day. I hope that the damage is minimal, but I suspect the city Energodar will surrender soon.

Marco Rubio is AN IDIOT. What may well be on fire are the concentric rows of mounded old tires and other junk the locals put down as barriers. If so, the people who set them on fire didn’t think of the deadly and ground hugging thick black smoke that would be produced.

The Russians may not have removed ALL of Ukraine’s nukes.

Nice sentiment but not true. Russia does not loose loose nukes until some pays for them.

The Russians have been avoiding the utilities around Ukraine so they do not have spend billions to rebuild.

So why would they shell a nuclear power plant? That does not make sense.

Who gains and who loses from this?

"I agree with just about everything you said. I still blame the guy conducting the invasion, air assault, and advancing tank battalions.
But your logic is similar to the story of the guy who slaps his wife. Then says “NOW look what you made me do”. I will not blame the non-invading forces for “killing every Ukrainian or taking them prisoner”. I will blame the side that actually does it.
I will blame Russia. I will blame that scum-bag KGB pinko named Vladimir Putin.
I hope the Ukrainians humiliate him in an historical manner."

That is an honest, reasoned opinion that I can respect even though I do not agree. I appreciate it.

It would appear that Putin is trying to red herring his ‘nuclear’ promise, not by firing an actual nuke, but by blowing up Ukraine’s own nuclear power plants, the poisoning of Russian territory itself, as well as anyone downwind for a thousand miles, be damned.

The closed circuit video shown on CNN clearly shows fire-at-will from the surrounding Ruskie forces, aimed not only at the support structures/buildings (two of which are clearly on fire) but at the towers themselves.

The emotional impact alone is pretty big.
