Vladimir Putin wants to seize all of Ukraine and "worse is to come" during the conflict, the French president has warned.
Emmanuel Macron held talks with Mr Putin over the phone this afternoon in a bid to ease tensions between Russia and the West.
According to French officials, Mr Macron told the Russian leader that he was making a "major mistake" in Ukraine, adding: "You are lying to yourself".
Following the call, Mr Macron believes "worse is to come" in the unfolding humanitarian crisis and that Mr Putin wants to seize the entire country, according to an aide.

Despite what you wrote Europe continues to fund this war.
Trump was right about NATO. We (the US taxpayer) spend big money to protect Europe from the very nation that Europe is reliant on for gas.
What military Russia (and China) have was mostly funded through trade with the West.
I can’t find anything sensible about this. IF these two countries are the “existential threats” that our elites claim they are WHY do we continue to do trade with them?
I think that's a real stretch. I believe Phtin saw an opportunity, based on the status of the U.S.
The current administration is a joke and couldn't even handle a withdrawal from Afghanistan. I also think the confidence of NATO in the administration is lacking. Let's not forget that Russia is an extremely significant player in energy for much of Europe; pull that plug and people will freeze.
Add those pieces together and it looks like good time to make a move. Then perhaps there was a gross over-estimation on how fast the Ukrainians would capitulate; which proved entirely wrong.
One idea though is that who might really benefit from all this? That could be China. If the action in Ukraine is prolonged, and the world focuses its attention and resources on Ukraine; what's to stop China from swooping in and capturing Taiwan. It's not a question of if China will make a move but when. At some point, China will have to aggressively expand its territory in a permanent way.
"We" can't even make the Biden gang allow US energy production and stop importing Russian crude.
That serves to cut off the Baltics. But thats no use in invading Poland. Poland does not need help from the Baltics, its the other way around. Hence target #2 is the Baltics. They are easy to cut off, and they are already surrounded.
“Trump was right about NATO. We (the US taxpayer) spend big money to protect Europe from the very nation that Europe is reliant on for gas.”
Yes. But this invasion by Russia is going to be transformational. Germany has broken their own law and sent weapons to Ukraine. They also signed guidance to spend a minimum of 2% on the military.
The peace dividend is now over. All thanks to Putin.
Trump was also correct about trade with China and energy from Russia for the EU and us.
“Why it’s Macron don’t ask me but I see that mentioned a lot”
France isn’t a member of NATO.
Macron is probably seen by Russia as the most independent minded of major Western powers, the least likely to simply align his opinions with NATO.
Best case could be a ceasefire call by Macron that Putin would honor and then let the mess get sorted out with minimal harm to Ukraine’s citizens.
Agree. Pray.
Yes that would be ideal at this point
How unfair comparing Hitler to poor Putin. I must make posts about it, from thread to thread. /
NATO lists France as a current member (1966 is a long time ago).
After what happened in the 2020 election, you are still looking at the USA as a beacon for freedom?
Wake up and smell the coffee. America is an occupied country ruled by an evil corrupt foreign puppet. Russia is the least of our problems.
First need to overthrow the current regime and only then can we talk about freedom.
Yeah, let’s not talk about freedom, ours or anyone else’s, until we overthrow the current regime.
If they do then that is a different matter
I seriously doubt that is even close to being realistic and is simply BS hype to get us more involved in something that is not our business
>> Hyperbole much?
@ pandemic levels
They should be offering to help with deescalation, not send more weapons.
It’s daring work I tell you.
Russian nuclear subs are right this minute only a couple hundred miles off our coast waiting to launch there nukes.
Why should the USA care if Mexico has Russian nukes?
In the reverse, the USA has subs a few miles off the coast of Russia, with nukes waiting to launch on the signal from Puppet Biden.
Much more fitting if Putin saw Stalin’s (or Mao’s) reflection in the window.
