Byron Goldstein closely monitors the energy usage at his Glenside home. So when he got a $651 bill from Peco Energy for combined electric and gas usage in January, 37% more than the $477 he paid the previous January, he knew something was off.
Goldstein discovered that Peco’s gas supply charge skyrocketed since January 2021, accounting for most of the increase. Goldstein, 74, was unsatisfied by the company’s response to his phone calls, so he filed a formal complaint to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, urging the state regulator to roll back Peco’s “outrageous and irresponsible” price increase.
He was not alone. Across the Philadelphia area, thousands of utility customers opened their bills in recent weeks to learn that the cost of heating their homes had soared much more than the 7% inflation rat

**** Pennsy Ping ****
Not to worry........ it’s Philly not America
Zero f***s given.
Yep.
Too bad we couldn’t have had a gas pipeline through our country to help keep energy prices low....
What can you say, but elections have consequences.
PECO serves 5 counties, 4 are not “Philly”.
How do you say - you voted for it. You backed Hillary, and you back Biden like 95%. You were happy with the woke DEI criticism of Trump. You wanted it and you got it. Karma's a bitch.
Byron Goldstein voted for Biden.
Deal with it, Byron. Enjoy the fruits of your vote.
Yhis entire energy “shortage” has a single root cause Biden. We were energy independent and an exporter of engery under Troop. Biden killed our independence and continues to shut down drilling and potential drilling. This hurts every American not just democrats.
Natural gas prices have more than doubled. If this guy was so in tune with energy, he knows nothing about the market price of the delivered commodity?
Or is this all just lots of works to state NG commidity charges are high because it mid winter.
That was the item about heating oil. With a calendar reminder, some self control and the right tank size, you could get your oil tank filled every may so at least half your home heating oil was bought at market lows.
The utilities can and do contract GAS for future delivery and lock in 360-180 before needing the NG but they go to rates boards with the market spot price when it is beneficial to them. The lie is exposed when you look at a utilities balance sheet and see investment income. Generation and Commidity costs get pushed onto the consumer.
There are a few companies who do allow you to lock in rates and they use the market to offset calendar risks. If you are really concerned about a 200 buck higher bill 4 times a year, I highly sugest you do some shopping or learn how to buy commidity instruments.
The other solution is to buy shares of your local utility with 200 bucks you have 8 times month because your furnace isnt keeping you alive. After a few years, the dividends will pay for your utility bills.
I use to keep the thermostat and uncomfortable levels per the season.. Now I use the utilities companies dividend to pay the bill. As long as your utility company isnt in CA or NY you should be good.
Gas bills up in a blue city..? Boo-hoo. Mine was up about five bucks over last year.
Yep. It never ceases to amaze me how stupid liberals are. See my tagline.
They voted for it.
Suck it up, Byron. You voted for it. Now you pay for it. No, don’t expect your Republican neighbor to pay your increased utility bill as well as his own.
Inflation Rat. I like it. Well since the price of gasoline doubled, so has my heating cost. $20 to run the chain saw instead of $10. Labor pays the same. $0.00/hr.
Huh? You folks up there have been voting for these democrats for years. Don’t you know they want your high electric bills.
Yep the price of items, goods, services go up/down
based upon many things. Nothing unusable about that.
