Four EU countries block Russia's disconnection from SWIFT

Germany, Italy, Hungary, and Cyprus are blocking Russia's disconnection from the international interbank system SWIFT as CNN reported.

“Removing Russia from SWIFT would make it almost impossible for financial institutions to send money in or out of the country. This would seriously impact Russian businesses with foreign customers and could do real damage to the country's economy,” the message says.

At the same time, high-ranking EU sources report that there is a split in the union amid the adoption of the issue.

It is noted that such countries as Germany, Italy, Hungary, and Cyprus are against disconnecting Russia from the SWIFT payment system.

A high-ranking EU diplomat said that "negotiations are going on right now," but believes that economic interests are likely to win the dispute and Brussels will not disconnect Russia from SWIFT.

As we reported, the United States did not envisage Russia's disconnection from the international interbank payment system SWIFT in the first package of sanctions for aggression against Ukraine, but the issue has not been completely removed from the agenda.

Yes, the Russians could turn off the natural gas but No Problem. The Europeans could switch to solar.

Ironically Cyprus is one of those countries, when the Turks invaded them just like Russia invaded Ukraine.

The Hungarian Revolution of 1848 failed because of Russian military intervention. The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 failed because of Russian (Soviet) military intervention. Both revolutions are marked by solemn national holidays in Hungary.

So I’m disappointed to see Hungary on that list. But I suppose business is business.

If the West pushes too hard Western brands will get replaced.

I would advise them not to try to create Kremlin-Kola, even the Albanians won't drink it, they'll use it for sheep dip.

Exactly, if it’s not their fight, then it’s not ours.

The KGB doesn’t need no stinking warrants to spy on hate-filled Muslims in the US and UK.

It would be big shame if certain KGB agents were reassigned.

Do it. Anything to weaken the “banks” hold on commerce.

Pepsi became popular about 90 years ago.

With modern analytical chemistry finding the formula to a product is now fairly easy.

They should try for the cola I had in Mexico.

In the US we drink mainly CO2 water.

“The Russians would turn off the gas flow to Germany if the flow of money to pay for the gas is shut off.”

But,,, didn’t Germany want to decrease their carbon footprint? Seems like a “win-win” situation to me... (s)

Wouldn’t that be the point of halting SWIFT, to impact Russia? Oh, can’t stop commerce, even while war is underway. Will the profits from Russian trade cover their aid and support of the Ukraine?

“...If Europe is not onboard, why are we?...”

If Biden had not kept agitating for war, always stirring the pot, I wonder if EU and/or NATO would have worked out a compromise with Putin.

A statement that NATO would not encroach on the Russian borders any more, and maybe making the two Dombas breakaway countries sovereign would do it. Ukraine would not like it, but they would be better off than now.

Seems like Joe does not have a consensus among his closest allies
for his plan to punish Russia.

Who will really be punished?

Biden is a very stupid man.

Being cynical, I can’t understand why the Europeans don’t agree.

Cutting Russia from SWIFT would divert all their energy trade in Euros - Europe’s own currency. It would give them a huge advantage, same that the the USA now enjoys.
