Being cynical, I can’t understand why the Europeans don’t agree.
Cutting Russia from SWIFT would divert all their energy trade in Euros - Europe’s own currency. It would give them a huge advantage, same that the the USA now enjoys.
If Germany tried to insist on buying gas with Euros, Russia could insist on using Gold.
Russia has a price or capacity advantage over other suppliers to Germany, and cannot easily be replaced.
What’s more: Ukraine currently *increases* the cost of Russia’s energy to Germany. There will be a lot of dry eyes in Germany if Ukraine is no longer in a position to affect gas prices.
