The Biden administration wants 50% of all new cars sold by 2030 to be electric or plug-in hybrids. But the average range of today’s electric cars is only about 180 miles. That means for any trip on an interstate, there have to be charging stations every few miles to ensure that people are stuck in the middle of nowhere high and dry.
Recognizing the problem, a big chunk of funding in the infrastructure bill was for building a network of power stations from Texas to Canada and from sea to shining sea.
That’s all well and good, but as the Washington Post points out, it’s just the tip of the iceberg.
The administration says the money is the largest investment of its kind, yet it still represents a fraction of the estimated $39 billion cost of building a public charging system by 2035.
“The $5 billion the EV Charging Program will provide is a historic investment, but it is far from sufficient,” the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental group, wrote in comments to the Federal Highway Administration. “Federal Highway Administration. “Federal guidance should do everything possible to encourage complementary commitments and hedge against displacing other investments or programs.”

But adding a few thousand power stations across the vast expanse of the U.S. doesn’t even begin to address the problem.
Electric vehicles are a tiny fraction of annual sales and establishing a viable network of chargers — the administration wants 500,000 — is widely seen as a vital step to convince more Americans to switch out their gas-powered cars.

The Federal Government/US Taxpayers did not pay to construct gas stations. So why is this Jobama regime getting involved in this electric car charging station business? It’s reasonable to conclude that since it’s the Federal Government, that another government take over of what should be left to private enterprise (electric car makers, electrical power companies, private investments) will eventually end in a catastrophic failure and literally strand the middle and lower class Americans ability to travel. Could that possibly be their goal?
I think you’re mistaken about a 40 to 50 minute charge length. Charging stations have already been installed at a large supermarket near me and the limit posted on the sign is 2 hours. Also, personal charging at home is still several hours (overnight for the most part.)
Actually the largest builders of charging stations right now are BP and Shell.
As the electrice car mandates happen in Japan and the EU you will see more of them come into the US.
The charging infrastructure is the biggest issue. But it will change.
.Gov charging stations will be the laughing stock because they will be in areas where they will be vandalized, under-utilized, and poorly maintained.
But its coming. The private sector will find a way to make it work.
What comes first-the chicken or the egg? No business will go ahead and do this on their own. Government has to take the lead. In the mid-90’s Japan chose analog in a digital future world.
Hindsight is always 20-20 so here’s one for you:
Would it have been better to invest a trillion dollars in this stuff when Saddam invaded Kuwait? Let the moozlems kill each other rather than OUR young? Would 911 have happened if the rag heads had no oil money-keep it here? Ethanol is bad for cars so corn can be called ‘corn over blood’
Next: Would we be better off if everyone took ivermectin/hydroxocloriquine at the beginning of the Covid crisis? Aids-Was the quick cure ($1k/yr cocktail) more dangerous than the disease? It’s suggested in RFK Jr.’s book.

So you are driving the thruway, you're running out of charge, so you pull up to the charging station, you plug in the charge cable, and your car makes a loud BANG! and now it won't run any more. Or it catches fire.
This is not unlikely at all -- IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN, OVER AND OVER.
So now you're on the thruway, family+dog in the car. Or worse, you're all standing back from it because it caught fire with all your stuff in it.
And then if you're really unlucky, another car comes up filled with nasty-looking strangers and you get robbed, or beat up, or raped, etc.
Not looking forward to this, no, not at all.
Why else have they been pushing mass transit forever?
Get them back on the bus, subway....

Necessity is the mother of invention. Where is the necessity here? The solution to these renewables is more likely to be found in some geeks garage where the guy has trouble paying his own electric bill. He’ll even work Saturdays-who wants to go out with a geek?
Ivermectin is just as available as fossil fuels in this country. Fracking was not around when Saddam invaded Kuwait. Our capabilities can solve our own problems as long as our MSM(meaning WE) don’t let the Dr. Fauchi’s get rock-star status. Rumsfeld got the same sex symbol treatment from our side-remember?

Just wait until they recognize the REAL problem is there is no juice to charge all those EVs and FedGov won’t let anybody build a real power plant that could deliver.
Go to https://www.ford.com/buy-site-wide-content/overlays/try-the-tech/, pick a start city and end city (i.e. I looked up a weekend beach trip to Gulf Shores from Huntsville). Then in the SPEED option choose DC Fast Chargers. Even in Alabama I'd have plenty of fast chargers to choose from if I get an EV like the F-150 Ford is promoting.
But that's if you use the EV for trips. If you need two cars anyway (i.e. you're married) then do like I plan to do and keep one gas car for trips.
I am ambivalent. I am not “against” electric cars. I don’t drive that much day to day—so it would work locally.
But I take a couple LONG trips every year—and I will continue to do so for a few more years. I like my truck for that—it allows me to get out of places where I might find myself “stuck.”
Otherwise, if you are not spending my money...I don’t care. LOL

You’re right, though. The electric grid is not going to be able to handle the enormous increase in demand. And what happens during extended outages? Ban tornadoes, hurricanes and cold weather?
