Roger Goodell calls NFL’s hiring results ‘unacceptable’ for diversity

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told the league’s 32 teams Saturday that the results of the current hiring cycle for head coaches have been “unacceptable” with regard to diversity, saying the league will retain outside experts to help “reevaluate and examine all policies” guiding minority hiring.

Goodell made his comments in a memo sent to the teams and all NFL employees four days after former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores sued the league and teams Tuesday, accusing them of racial discrimination. The NFL has only one active Black head coach. No Black head coaches have been hired so far this offseason as teams have worked to fill nine head coaching vacancies leaguewide.

In his memo, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post, Goodell also said that the tanking and tampering allegations made against the Dolphins by Flores in his lawsuit “will be reviewed thoroughly and independently.” The memo marked Goodell’s first comments on the accusations made by Flores.

Brewer: Brian Flores is done pretending, and the NFL is losing control “Racism and any form of discrimination is contrary to the NFL’s values,” Goodell wrote. “We have made significant efforts to promote diversity and adopted numerous policies and programs which have produced positive change in many areas, however we must acknowledge that particularly with respect to head coaches the results have been unacceptable. We will reevaluate and examine all policies, guidelines and initiatives relating to diversity, equity and inclusion, including as they relate to gender.

“Sure - make the coaching staffs reflect the race of the players - every head coach and most of his staff should be black.”

I'm not familiar with the situation with Flores in Miami. Is it true that he started the season with seven losses and finished with eight wins, or something like that? I think I'd keep him...

The elephant in the room, IMO, is Eric Bienemy, the OC for the Chiefs. This is JMO but I believe he has the job he wants, and just might be waiting for Andy Reid to retire... sometime within say the next 3-5 years.

Bienemy would rock as a head coach. I recall when he played for Colorado back when they were still in the Big XII. (Or was it the end times for the Big VIII; I don't think Bienemy is quite that old.)

The bad part for him will be the fanfare and celebration about being a new BLACK head coach, when really what one might assume he would want (I don't personally know the guy) is to be just regular Head Coach. The extra pressure to not only succeed as Head Coach but also BLACK Head Coach would seem to be unhelpful.

One thing that hasn't helped certain black coaches is a tendency to embrace certain political agendas that have nothing to do with winning football games, or with team unity... Pittsburgh and Chicago have seen this happen and probably others too.

Plus Goodell is a diphsit. This will never get straightened out so long as he's in charge.

Any team with a black head coach, starts the game with 7 points on the scoreboard.

Funny to watch Goodell and NFL overreact to this bogus Flores lawsuit.

The primary claim that the Giants already hired the other coach prior to Flores interviewing, is denied with evidence by the Giants.

He acted emotionally to a coach Belicek belief that another coach was already hired. Giants vehemently deny that and have evidence that the other coach still hadn’t had his 2nd interview yet.

But NFL will investigate blah blah blah.

Flores and black coaches haven’t performed, which is why Tomlin is the only black coach. There are a couple of exceptions like coach Caldwell. Stven A Smith is hilarious, after calling for the black Cinn. coach to be fired for not winning 1 playoff game in 11 years, but then has the same coch, Marvin Lewis, on as a coach to give his input on black coaches being fired.

The Packers tried this affirmative action with Ray Rhodes...it lasted one year.

The NFL is hopelessly racist. The only answer is to end it and free the player/slaves.

Hire a black coach or manager and get blamed for racism when you fire him has happened more often than not.

Wonder how Tomlin will do without Big Ben as quarterback?

The NFL needs to face up to its history of vicious racism—by going out of business permanently.

Goodell needs to fire himself for starters!

There are only 7 Black Billionaires in the U.S. So it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Good for nothing good Goodell has ruined the NFL. Recovery not in the future.

Well, considering Tomlin had a horrible offensive line and a QB on his last leg, they made the playoffs.

Ownership/Rooney’s gave us this stupid quota Rooney Rule, they also failed to draft a QB last year, which was an elite QB class. So, now they will have slim picking in down QB class this year. Only Pickett has a SHOT to be an above average to elite QB. Pat Corrall COULD be an average QB, possibly.

The AFC will see Bengals win that division now for some time. Ravens could pick off a year here and there. Pittsburgh all depends on if they get lucky in QB draft and also Draft for that Off Line.

“how easy it is to fulfill the rule but still not promote diversity.”

You can hire the best, or hire for diversity. Just not enough owners willing to lose games to achieve diversity - yet! Me? I’d love to see all the “crackers” like Goodell fired and rename it the All Black Football League. But I largely stopped watching when the Colts left Baltimore.

Here’s an idea. How about letting the owners, who spent a lot of money on their teams (and by the way like to hold cities hostage for new stadiums - but I digress)…anyway, let the owners - who “own” the teams pick and choose the staff they want, to make their team successful. Diversity IS NOT strength.

IF I am the owner of any sports team, I will pay the best players I can find the $$$ I need to to be successful.

Sports isn’t a game of “TIES”.

They all want to WIN.

IF a coach doesn’t have the abilities-—demanding that black coaches get hired won’t suddenly have ‘ability’ show up in his game plans. NOT POSSIBLE.

I walked away from 2 rather good jobs in my younger years-—the 70’s—because promotions were given to OUTSIDE hires in Affirmative Action samples.

Accounting positions:
NEITHER had speed—
Accuracy—
Solid attendance—
Actual education in accounting—
Incentive—
Or a willingness to GET THE WORK DONE!!!

NEITHER LASTED 9 MONTHS.

I left quietly & found another position.

By 1980, I went out on my own doing accounting for small businesses.

NEVER HIRED anyone-—did it all myself. Lots of midnight oil was burned, but no deadlines were missed.

Affirmative Action doesn’t create ABILITY...not even in Coaching positions.

Goodall doesn’t have any of his MILLIONS invested in any team as an owner-—He is NOT part of the solution, IMO.

I hate the NFL but could their be a more phony outraged Black Man than Flores?

ONLY after he is fired does he start complaining??? NOW the NFL is like a slave plantation.

Who doubts that he would have kept his mouth shut if he remained a HC?

He would have gladly cracked the whip and kept the plantation going.

Phony as a plastic banana!
