Ohio Supreme Court strikes down congressional map, forcing another round of drawing

The Ohio Supreme Court struck down the state's congressional district map, saying Republicans violated the Ohio Constitution by drawing districts that favored GOP candidates.

Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor was, once again, a key vote in the 4-3 decision to reject the map, which would have given Republicans a 12-3 advantage in a state that leans Republican.

Districts 5, 7, 6, 9, 10 and 15 strike me as a bit odd.

When I was on flights from Chicago to Mumbai in 1968, I had my address taped in large letters on my suitcase. And I was dressed in a stripped dark brown suit, with a felt hat. People gave me extra deference, because even in India, Al Capone was well known.

I was thinking about this map, as described in this Federalist article from November: Are Senate Republicans In Ohio Trying To Oust Jim Jordan With Redistricting?.

Most districts consist of entire counties. So that sounds not very contrived to me.

~~~
Districts 1, 3 and 11 are the only ones that are strongly urban democrat.
Those are Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland respectively.
I think maybe 10 has a chance to tip democrat too, but I think the reason they wanted to reject it is because this way, democrats win only 3 or 4, and get the remaining 11.
However, it is NOT at all gerrymandered by the definition, which would be long, winding, strongly irregular shapes meant to divide up geographically contiguous populations.
"Pa. legislators buckled, shamefully."
How did they buckle? The PA court imposed it, they sued, and the US Supreme Court refused the case. There was no buckling.
IMO they were rolled. The Democrats would never have tolerated any court overruling their Constitutional authority.
Hexas are a better shape than circles, they don’t leave gaps.
But really, a more equitable way to do this would be to make these district sizes based on two things - population AND area. Weight them equally to keep each district as close to the same overall size as possible, while also keeping as close to the same number of people as possible. It’s not really fair when a major city or two has 3-4 districts each and the rest of the State has one or two for the entire thing.
